Dangerous Tacoma Defect!?
I was just browsing Phoenix, AZ news looking for a story about an old acquaintance that was murdered and happened to come across this...

is it possible that this has something to do with the floor mats?
If this guy knew about the problem why wouldnt he have taken it to the dealership in the first place? not just told his insurance about it?
Also...I know its first instinct to slam on the brakes but when this hapened to people why wouldnt they just throw it in netural than hit the brakes? Yea the engine would blow but who gives a crap

jesus mary and joseph.. now i know why i dont buy a new car, period. probably due to that electronic throttle crap theyre using now. but yeah, ive driven a car that did that to me.. i threw it in neutral and turned off the engine but kept acc on so i could steer. toyota, what you thinkin?

on the other hand 20 complaints out of 178,000 units sold... yes I agree that is 20 too many... not one person in the interview said they tried to put it in neutral or shut the engine off or anything like that... toyota is not the only maker to have trouble with these "drive by wire" systems... I recall chrysler/jeep had the same problem a few years ago and Ford as well...
it would be nicer if toyota had taken a more proactive stance then "we'll look at it if we're asked to"... it would be interesting to know the build dates of the problem vehicles it could be just a matter of one shipment of defective parts from a sub-contractor...
on the other hand you could use this as an excuse to get out of a speeding ticket...

Unfortuneatly it is due to all these drive by wire vehicles that people become worse and unskilled drivers. They begin to trust everything, like traction control for instance, and have no idea how to drive. In no way do i defend toyota, but the drivers should have used the knowledge to chuck it in neutral, like mentioned or even try the ebrake. I was always taught that if you cant stop get it in neutral.and get on the ebrake.no brakes, worse case, huck it in reverse. The floor mats is a very good observation that was made. Toyota sure is taking a pounding lately and I am not surprised.
But the next time i see a quickly approaching taco in my rearview, im getting the hell out of the way!

So how dumb are these people? All you gotta do is is shift into neutral and thats it..
I had an old firebird do that, shifted it into neutral and blew the engine but it saved my life.

I mean come on he knew there was a issue and did nothing about it to olys hole with him...

man i think everybody has had this happen to them. i was driving a volvo and had the accelerator stick. common sense put it in neutral. im not defending toyota but these people are idiots

It's easy to call these people idiots. But, this forum is full of people that understand how vehicles work. Many people on the road only understand how to drive when everything is working as it is designed to.
This reminds me of a time when a semi got pulled over for doing 130MPH. The truck had run out of fuel and on some older diesels this would cause the engine to continue to accelerate until it would fall apart. The driver was experienced, however panic set in and it took him some time before he came to his senses and remembered to pull the relief valve to shut down the engine. Rumor has it that the driver was white as a ghost when he finally stopped.

The drivers obviously cant tell the difference between the gas and the brake, how would TOYOTA make a mix-up like that? that sounds like a fomoco problem, not TOYOTA! and if there was any evidence to back up that the Taco ha a problem, the compeditors would use it to their advantage, and diss TOYOTA in commercials. and i would be on international news, not some local new station trying to get some money cause no one watchs them. i call BS on tha report.

Didn't see the video, but I've been in that situation. Neutral then shut off the engine works quite well. Yes, you will lose power steering but while you're rolling on pavement, it isn't as necessary as some would make you think. Will vacuum power brakes, you will not lose your brakes, at least not right away. The vacuum reservoir will hold enough to stop you even with the engine off.
