carbon and seafoam
I just got my 03runner back from the shop. It went in on tuesday with a knock. The dealership said it was a bit of carbon buildup that created the knock. Once the engine got hot it went away. The runner only has 42K, so this seems weird to be, but maybe it was some bad gas.
Has anyone done a seafoam treatment on the new 4.0L? Where did you apply it?
Thanks for any info.

Carbon build-up after only 42k? Seems a little suspicious to me. What kind of gas have you been burning?
Are you sure the 'knock' you are hearing isn't an exhuast leak? An exhuast leak would explain the disappearance of the noise once the engine warmed up.

It was definatly not an exhasut knock. It is gone now. Since my truck has a blown HG my wife and I are carpooling and we noticed a strong sulfer smell when she gets on it to merge or go up a big hill. It must be related to the carbon build up.
We usually run Costco gas. From all I hear the Gas here in S Idaho is the same at any pump. There is only one pipline to the lower half of the state. It doesnt make too much sence since some is oxygenated, some has techron..but people claim its all the same.

Just got off the phone with Toyota. I guess there is a TSB on sulpher smells. The ECU puts too much fuel in at idle. So they replace the cats, and recalibrate the ECU. This should fix the smell and the carbon issue.
As far as gas goes, I also found out chevron has a mixing plant here in Boise, so I guess I will alternate a chevron with techron every few tanks to keep it cleaner.

UPDATE:
Had the TSB on the ECU/cats done last week.
The smell is gone. So far no more carbon noises, but I did a seafoam too...
The rig is MUCH smoother on acceleration, and hasnt shuttered at idle yet. The injector tick is also much much quieter.... No aparent loss of power, mpg is about the same.. but its still the tank where they ideled it quite a bit, so it may get better.
