Can you clean a TRD Taco air filter? (2010)

Ok Y-techsters, here goes:

Last July, I bought a 2010 Taco TRD with 22,000 on it from Beaver Toyota in Santa Fe. I hadn't done any maintenance on it 'til today, cos a was a-skeered to work on somethin' this new. (my other ride is a 1st gen '82)

So... I changed the oil. Then I looked at the air cleaner. Black as the inside of a West Virginia coal mine. The poor thing has 44,000 on it now. I am guessing that it has never been cleaned or changed in that entire time, even though I took it back to Beaver for the 30,000 maintenance checkup, and an oil change or two (besides jiffy lube when on road trips).

I note that the original element looks pretty burly, and would seem to be oiled. Can I clean it, and if so, what sort of solvent should I use, and what kind of oil should I oil it with? Coming from the land of 1st gen, I am new to These Things...

If its a paper fiber element, throw it and get a new one. If its an actual TRD air filter made of cotton (similar to a K&n) then you can get a cleaning kit from the dealer or trdparts4u.com

Well, as far as I can tell it's the original, says TRD on it and would appear to be cotton meshed with metal screen. In the meantime, I've brushed it off with a soft toothbrush and blew it out with my compressor - hope that didn't hurt anything.

X2 on the cleaning kit, probably needs to be re-oiled (don't over due on the oil though)

If you used compressed air then you have compromised the filter. Pull it out and replace with an AFE dry element filter. AFE makes the filters for TRD.

personally, I'd do that anyway... I hate oiled filters; have had nothing but bad luck from them in the past

is it a TRD intake too, or just the filter element in a stock box?

It's a TRD intake, with the burly, conical filter. After dry scrubbing and compressed air, I did notice what looked to be tiny pin holes in the cotton element.

So - where can one get a good price for thees AFE feelter of wheech you speak?

since is a cone filter, almost any type of aftermarket cone filter should do the job, just take the measurements of the filter you have now

Find a match (or as close to a match as you can) and most parts stores can usually order them based off a part number
