because I would have ended up doing the wiring mod to make it work how I wanted, and I'd have to pull the entire wiring harness; it's just easier to me to make my own harness I'll grab a roll of trailer wiring harness and some loom and have it whipped up in no time for like $10
only thing left to figure out is getting the OEM light to kick on in the cluster; I need to have a look at the pin-out for the plugs on the cluster. it appears to be a violet and white wire from the ECU to the cluster that kicks on the light from looking at the schematic for the locker system itelf

You do realize I did this on my '86....
....with the locker ecu....
....and oem switch.....
....with a custom harness....
It's only six wires from the locker to the ecu. One wire from the switch to the ecu, iirc.
Stop over thinking.
Get the ecu. Cut al the plugs you need. Get a weatherpack six connector set. Boom.

lol, it's not really that much more complicated doing it the way I am, to me anyhow. wiring doesn't hold me back at all; I have no problem working with schematics once I study them and see how everything functions

I just like to do things the way I know how they work. If everything just plugs into a box, I don't know what that box is doing. Wiring it up how I want to allows me to make it do what I want it to do, when I want it to do it same reason I modified the wiring on my fog lights too
Wiring schematic has been laid out for the locker pigtail and the relay. Using this relay, Radio Shack P/N 275-0218 (DPDT 12v 10a relay). Also using this socket, Radio Shack P/N 275-0220 (10a capable relay socket). I'll be soldering all of the connections directly to the socket so swapping a relay will be quick and easy if I ever have to.
Here's the gist of it, but I'll draw up a full schematic for the thread just for reference and anyone else that might want it.
*These wire colors are on an 05-06 Tacoma FOR SURE, but I'm sure they're the same up to at least 08-09; may have changed around after they started offering the different slip control or decent assist stuff.
--- DPDT RELAY HARNESS ---
1 - Green/Black
2 - + 12v (20a fuse)
3 - + 12v (20a fuse)
4 - Pink
5 - Green
6 - Blue
7 - Ground
8 - Locker Switch (Red/Black, + 12v)
--- LOCKER HARNESS ---
* = DPDT RELAY HARNESS
*Green/Black - relay pin 1, motor control
*Pink - relay pin 4, motor control
*Green, relay pin 5, motor
*Blue, relay pin 6, motor
Blue/Yellow - to lock LED ground
White/Black - ground (X's 2)

So at the end of today, here's where it stands. The rear end is in the truck; took a test drive and mechanically it's good to go. Electronically, I have a bug to work out... the diff locks, but now it wont unlock I finished up the wiring as it was getting dark so there's no telling what I messed up. Going to hit it tomorrow and debug it; shouldn't be hard once I have light.
BUT, at least the hard part is done Couldn't have asked for nicer weather today either; didn't break a sweat the entire time! Love this time of the year
have to move this little bracket over to the harness on the locking diff
home-brew wire harness
it's nifty that Toyota gives you prewired plugs for EVERYTHING, even though I didn't even use it, lol
Since I didn't used a factory wire harness or 4wd module, I tapped into the cluster harness for the locker indicator. It's the small plug on the right hand side; a turquoise colored wire with a yellow stripe. the signal wire from the locker just grounds this lead out to light the LED in the cluster. easy-peasy
So tomorrow I'll see what's up with my relay wiring. It's odd that it actually locked though if the wiring is buggered, considering the schematic and how it works. Oh well, I'll get it figured out after a night's rest

It's been a while since I've done any major wrenching on a truck; seriously the last time I got myself into something major was the 22re rebuild on the 91. It kind of feels good even though it was short lived; just swapping an axle is a lot quicker than rebuilding a whole motor, lol

This project would have been a lot more involved had you used your original axle housing and gone thru modifying it. However, its still wrenching and that makes for happiness!

yeah swapping the entire axle was just easier, lol. plus it would have cost me just as much just swapping 3rd's, so bump that
