why does my 22re ping?

I am pretty sure that the sound i hear is a ping. at first i suspected it might have something to do with the new timing chain/tensioner we put in it, but when i refilled the tank and put a bottle of octane booster crap from wal-mart in it, the sound was completely gone. it seems to come back sort of, when the tank gets low, and i guess this is because it doesnt mix perfectly in the gas tank. when i refill with another bottle of octane booster, the noise is gone again.

it sounds like a 'tick' or 'click' that seems only to happen in 3rd,4th,5th gears , but this i can't totally confirm. gets louder as i push harder into the throttle, and/or put more load on the engine by going up a steep hill. usually between 2500-3500 rpms (but i rarely take it past there, so i can't confirm that it wouldn't keep making the noise up to 6000)
my conclusion that this is a ping is due to the fact that it will completely disappear if i have 'enough' octane booster crap in my gas tank
which is fine...i'll use it, its cheap enough, truck seems to run better too. but i can't be sure, because before this i have never heard a ping...i would expect a ping to have a lot more of that 'ing' sound in it, this sounds more to me like possible timing chain slop, but i figured that if it disappears with better gas, it must be ping...am i wrong in assuming this?

but what is the likely problem here? what should i look at first?
the valve clearance has not been set for an unknown ammount of time, but would this have anything to do with pinging? should i look at something in the fuel injection? ignition? oxygen sensors?

i appreciate all your help

22RE's are pretty noisy. Could be injectors, valves, or just some cheap gas...Don't think I'd pay it too much mind. Would re-adjust the valves though if it's too bothersome to live with, but it may take a few tries to set 'em just right.

yeah you know when i first got this truck, i thought, god damn this is a noisy POS, but since then, every time i've rolled up next to another one at a red light, i can hear their valves ticking over mine, so i guess its just to be expected

but this sound bothers me a little more than others, especially considering that it could be related to the brand-freakin-new timing chain in it...and its not just the valve tick that i can hear all the time...this is something else
any other suggestions are appreciated

I have been through the same thing, after my timing chain install. I ended up using a colder spark plug by nippon denso and i have to use at least 91 octane, when i did this all ping is gone and it runs great

timing has been set twice since new chain, and as far as i know its still dead on

...but like i said, valve lash was never set, but as um... ignorant as i still am about engines, i can't really decide whether or not that should have anything to do with pings or whatever this noise is. i will be getting it done, its just a matter of finding the time to do it or the money to pay someone to do it. untill then though, i can't be sure if that is THE problem. but i do know it is one of them, so i'll get on it

but as far as the timing, yeah it was set what, a week ago? should be fine

hey maximus thanks for the input

but i just have to say i find something fishy here...this engine should be able to run just fine on 87 shouldn't it? it just seems silly putting expensive gas and additives into this, of all engines...its just something you tend to associate with expensive foreign race cars...not the slowest trucks on the planet

BTW, does it sound like i am describing ping or something else?

its pinging i would say, its usually caused by carbon buildup, try some SeaFoam, there are several articles here about it use the search for SeaFoam. It helped mine alot but i still had aslight ping after that. i just sucked it up and put the higher octane in and it stopped

My "92 had pinging when I bought it a month or so ago. It has a new chain and head from previous owner.$1800.00 worth.... had to set timing at about 2.5 BTC to get rid of pinging..on 87 octane.

All the 22r's or 22RE's I have owned have pinged a bit until you find their respective timing sweet spot.

My '94 22re has pinged since new on 87 octane. I used to just put 91 octane in it until gas prices went out of control a few years ago. Then I just backed the timing off. Instead of the recommended 5 degrees. I can make the ping go away by setting it to about 1 or 2 degrees.

None of my trucks ping because I set my timing at stock setting and I run regular or plus gas.Everything mechanically has been set at stock specs and oil change regularly...
