Sorry to hear of your issues, but it seems that clueless "mechanics" and bungled work for high prices are the order of the day.
I don't let anybody else touch my stuff.
Look to the tightness of the carrier bearing shimming and the ring and pinion backlash while you have it apart.

Problem is the age thing- getting up there now, but there is also the money/value thingy as in NO value for work done. Took a few years but my attitude now is- if I am capable of doing it why pay and if there is a particular tool needed then it may be justified in a purchase. Then of course if the job goes sideways the finger points backwards
