Speedo Cable Squeal

Speedo Cable Squeal
Was driving across the province when a weird squeal started coming from what I thought was the front end/engine bay area of my 89 v6 5spd pu. It would only do it at 60 kmh and above, so it was hard for me to diagnose on the road. It made no difference if the truck was in gear, clutch depressed, motor running, brakes applied, etc.
I made it home and jacked up the rear end and ran the truck up to speed (around 80kmh) while stationary and the noise was still there, so I knew it was not in my front end. It seemed to be coming from the dash so I thought speedo cable. Sure enough, I unclipped it from back of tranny and voila, no more noise.
So can this be fixed with just removing my speedo cable and regreasing, or is this a likely indication that the actual cable is on its last legs and needs to be replaced? I forgot my FSM at my other place so I am wondering if anyone is familiar with how to remove/replace/service this cable. Any help before I tear into it would be greatly appreciated.

Mine started squealing last December. I have a replacement cable standing by in case it snaps or I get bored. Looking at the new cable, I cannot see where it could possibly be disassembled or opened, in order to lube it. If anyone knows some 'secret way' to get grease into it, please let everyone know! Thanks, -KB-
