Shock on top of leaf?

Looking at an 86 Toyota. Has a Rancho lift w/blocks in the rear. It has a shock mounted horizontally on top of the leaf from the top of the block (axle area) to the front of the leaf (hanger)...what is that all about?

Is it to prevent axle wrap? Never seen anything like it before. Thanks!

yeah its an anti-wrap shock, lots of people run them around here, definately something you REALLY need if your running crappy lift blocks because the axlewrap gets so bad

it's more to prevent wheel hop than axle wrap, though both are related- when the axle is allowed to wrap it can suddenly unwind causing the tire to bounce, grab and chatter, and it's the sudden unwinding and oscillations from the winding and unwinding the shock tries to prevent.

below the frame, on top of the leaf spring, horizontal between the axle and front spring mount.

Thanks guys! Thats what I thought it was for. I told the guy "those have to go!" lol. I'm NOT a fan of blocks. Can't see why some people spend $40K on a truck and stack blocks in the rear?
