not even thinking swap at that point Chef. Would just say so-long to the '87 and start again fresh, but I dunno. Just don't want to be paranoid if let's say we went wheeling and on the way to meet up, I'm thinking... "Is this the hill that claims my new head gasket or is it the next one before my tranny falls out of the truck".

...maybe it's just monday and I hate to take my stang to work and not my 'yota

Hmmmm, could it be your tranny cooler that's taking a crap? Not sure if this could cause overheating, but I'd BET that, if it's hot out, or the engine is under serious load(you know, LIKE THE GRAPEVINE!lol)..Well, then I would imagine it could very well cause issues. I've heard of solenoids or something going out in those.... something like 250$ DIY total cost. However, ... if you're going to swap the 5spd... I think you'll really like it! I LOVE having that extra control, creeping down stuff in 1st, etc. Not to mention, I believe the mileage is a bit better, lil more power(umph)lol. Interested in seeing what you do next. BTW, I'd definitely let you know when I take my trip... maybe can meet up and 'swap info', hahaha. I usually do the Carpenteria Avo Festival... but that's not till Oct. I believe.

Since it looks like the 5spd swap is a 'go' at this point, any advice on the clutch for a W56?

Also, since the auto A340F is coming out of my '87 Xtrab cab and a 5spd W56 is going in from an '86 regular cab should I expect problems with driveshaft length?

looks like the clutch will either be a aisin oem or a marlin 1200lb. I helped pull the 22r motor out of my buddy's '86 donor truck for his next project. My new 5spd tranny is still in it waiting for me. I see from his enginebay plate that his '86 is a 4.10 gear truck and my '87 is 4.30.

From what I have learned from other threads. It really looks like my gearing played a role in my problems with the truck and steep grades. I swear I didn't have these problems when I ran 31 inch BFG AT's but now with my 31 inch procomps and the aggressive thread, I'm having issues. Not to mention that my tranny has only gotten worse in the last 2 years, which may be the main factor.

With the swap to a 5spd and a new clutch. Should I start on a gear swap next (4.56 or 4.88) ...or should my factory 4.30s with a 5spd swapped in do fine for 31's on the freeway and up 7% grades???

For instance...This 7% grade stretch of the 101 freeway got my 22re pretty warm at 45mph uphill...

...also I'm not planning to go bigger than 31's and I'm going back to BFG A/Ts when i need new rubber. just want a nice little trail/camping rig.

Idle Dips When Brake Pressed

Idle Question

Solution: Turn down your idle.

hmmm... I didn't even think of that. thnx guys I still think I'm going ahead with the 5spd swap since it looks like I have everything lined up now (parts, garage, tools, extra set of hands, etc...). I'll for sure wire the neutral safety switch wires together like blake said, I've read that in a few more threads. I just kinda hope 4.30s will be tall enough for my 31's day in, day out.

So I got the all the 5spd parts out of my friend's '86 regcab and took a peek at my friend's engine plate on the firewall. He's got a G52 trans that I just got done pulling out not a w56. His reg cab drive shaft is 46" and mine is just a hair over 53". Happily there was an '88 x-cab in the next bay in my buddy's shop with a w56. I climbed under it and did a quick measurement, just about 55". perhaps I'll be buying (2) 1" spacers since I think the W56 is the same size as the G52. I know it's not quite as strong as a w56 but is there any major draw back to putting a G52 trans in?

Also it has a top mounted transfer case (No blockoff plate). I thought all transfer cases mated to g52s were forward mounted.
