Did both today
i replaced both front axles today on my 91 3.0 pickup the trick i used to get the axles in and out was to turn the wheels to full lock and while the truck was on jack stands use the floor jack to compress the suspension this allowed me to slide the axle out to the rear easily.

Great tutorial! OP said, " Make sure the gasket on the flange is new or undamaged." A subsequent poster said, " Mine didn't have a gasket or seal where the half shafts meet the tulip or front drive train." Toyota parts diagram doesn't offer a flange gasket: https://parts.olathetoyota.com/auto-...d-carrier-scat. Can anyone elaborate on the need for a flange gasket and maybe point to a source? Thanks

Working on my CVs right now and thought I'd mention something I haven't seen on here. It seems the most difficult issue with this job is having enough room to remove/install the axles. I ended up unbolting and slightly jacking up the front differential. There's just one bolt and you can raise it about 1-1.5". This gave me just enough room to easily slide the axles out and in.

Sorry to hear you went through all that work on the differential. As described in this thread, ALL you need to do is lift the wheel, as though the truck were sitting on the wheels. That makes the angle of the half-shaft correct, and there is plenty of room to get the half-shafts out.

It really was not much work at all. Like I said, the one bolt right on the front connected to the cross member and it jacks right up. I did do everything else to raise the control arms as well to get the correct geometry and while possible to get the axles through like that alone, it was still very tight and difficult on my truck. It took literally 2 minutes or less to raise the diff and saved me ~15-30 mins of frustatration and struggling working the axles through
