Prob just an "el Cheapo" filter you had. Just get a new one and fill it with oil before you put it on a drive. Its pretty rare for anything to be "clogged" going to the oil filter from the pan and to bypass the filter to the pump.... get a good filter.. i by toyota filters they are about 5 bucks.

i got a good question finally...

what the HELL is that thing on the side of the 3vz (oil filter side) that's back closer to the tranny...it looked like some sort of filter..i have NO CLUE what it is..

That would be the cover for the oil cooler mount. Mine has an aluminum, dome shaped cover with small ribs cast in. If you had an oil cooler there would be coolant hoses going to it. I haven't ever seen one on a 3vz though.

Turbo RTE's came with them too... So you can plumb any 22R to use it...


The thought of this thing being a "cooler" is funny to me. Engine coolant flows around it and it's only "cooler" b/c the coolant temp is lower than the engine oil temp... So, IOW's the "cooler" will never get below what the T-stat is set for...

I'm sure there are more efficient "coolers" from the aftermarket... and possibly cheaper.

oil filter aside, if you're also losing prime, you prolly have a bad timing cover.


They can wear and get grooves in them. When they do that, the oil can get around the gears instead of only being in the tooth area...

Yeah its more of an equalizer, but my oil temps are usually higher than the coolant (once it has been run for about 30-45 mins). Even with this extra oil cooler.

I can see this as I have the pump off to replace the o ring. What would cause this? I'm having trouble with the pump sealing and I think this might be why.

ok . y'all say you prime the filter before putting it on. what keeps your oil in the filter while screwing it on? mine is sideways on the right side of the block. the oil would run out before it went on if I did that.
