bringing this one back from the grave because i'm having the same problem after a complete rebuild.

over 700 miles since rebuild and not much oil in filter when i did the change. using valvoline 5w30 oil and a premium wix filter.

i can tell there is oil in the filter but i can hold it upside down and nothing drips out. i checked the filter again about 100 miles after the change and same deal.

i remember before the rebuild oil would pour down the side of the block. oil pressure is good.

Toyota quality and increased filtration media = longer life for the same $$.

I run them because I run my amsoil synthetic for 8k or so.

The anti-drain back valve is suppose to keep the oil inside the filter, so if oil is in there and not coming out I'd say its doing its job.

On the original guy that had a dry filter (didn't see what brand) only thing I can think of is the filter bypass valve was stuck open.

He said he was using an Amsoil filter. Ive never used one before, cant comment on them..

Oh, I believe they have a dome end by-pass valve so its hard to see how the filter stayed dry if that's the case. Thread end by-pass valve I could maybe see it.

My 22re never drips oil down the block if I wait 20 minutes or so before removeing it from the engine. If I remove the filter soon after shutting the engine down, it will spill oil everywhere.

A few minutes after shutdown, your oil will run out of the center of the filter and into the oil pickup tube. There will still be oil trapped in the filter from the anti drainback valve, however this will not leak out.

For those of you who say your oil leaks out when you remove the filter, try waiting 30 minutes or so from the time you drain the pan til the time you remove the filter. I bet you won't make a mess.

They are made FOR the 22R, BY the ppl that made the 22R... Not a filter made to accept a particular size thread and o ring diameter...


Toyota knows how it oriented its filters and made a anti drain back...

The AM does not know or could care less if it did and just makes the media fit inside a metal can and make sure the thread fits and the o ring will keep the oil in...

Now it may not be a malicious as that, and every filter may not be made that way... But think about who made what and FOR what for a moment...

Cheap + aftermarket = will win you a rebuild faster than if you used the parts that were designed to be used on it in the 1st place...

I guarantee it.

Yea I was. Ive been using the D3 filters since this thread first started. I talked the dealer down to $3.50 a filter for 10 of em.

why would you want to use the v8 filters?

are there benefits? any modifications needed?

Filters more oil, I run an even 5qts of oil vs the 4.7. Same price. Fits just like a D1 filter but its 1'' taller.

Basically, its the same price as the other filters, its a Toyota filter so the anti drain back works and holds oil. its way better then a fram.

The boxes make a sweet pyramid on my desk too lol

pretty sure a big fat 3Fe oil filter fits it too...

As tight as that engine bay is, I'd look into a remote filter.

You can mount it straight up and down like a Chevy, it's easier to prime that way and the lines add capacity... Maybe even more cooling...

I have run into this problem on mine when changing the oil. I tried putting a bigger filter on it, but that just made it take longer to build oil pressure on start up. I even tried napa gold, k&n, and a bigger toyota filter before I said screw it and went back to the smaller sized filters. I still pull the filter off every oil change and very rarely have oil come out of it. I've just stopped worrying about it.
