I thought more about it last night and that's the conclusion I came to as well - valves tapping, not oil pump.

I've never taken a bottom end apart and with this mileage, I think I'll just keep it going and keep a better eye on the oil level/pressure so it doesn't get in the danger zone again.

I'm puzzled that I was so low, after adding a quart a month ago (and never having had to get in the habit of adding oil in between changes before).

I've had the truck 10 years and put 74,000 miles on it - got it with 200,000.

Thanks

Phil

The low oil level was starving the chain tensioner for oil.
The noise you heard was your chain without tension.

Keep oil in her...lol.

As far as were your oil is going...thats another can o worms.

Low oil pressure could be caused by worn main bearings or a clogged pickup screen, on a cold start listen for a deep knocking sound that doesn't last long, if you hear that it's worn mains, if the clearance between the crank journal and the bearing becomes to great it will not hold a film of oil between them and knocking and loss of pressure will result.

Thanks Pat. I think you mentioned something similar earlier in the thread. Just was going through my subscriptions and came across this thread...wanted to update it. Not experiencing the rat tat tat at cold start anymore since putting more oil in, so I think I am good for now. If it returns and oil level drops, I will update thread.

Thanks again everyone
