Knock Sensor issues...out of ideas

I have been tryin to fix this for weeks now and am runnin out of ideas and i really dont want to have to take it to the dealership. So basically my check engine light came on and stayed on for a few days, then went away. Well this happened twice, and on the third time I decided to check the code. It came up with two codes and they were both 52 (Knock sensor). So i figured the sensor was bad, or the wire. So i took off the intake adn replaced both the sensor and the wire. I checked the old sensor and the wire too, and they seemed fine. But i wasnt going to pull off all of that crap and for nothin and have them go bad later. SO i put everything together, cleared the code and fired it up. Drove down the road and it came right back on. Drove around for a awhile tryed to clear the code again and again but it wouldnt go away. So i checked the code again and it was still two codes, both 52. So i thought maybe my ECU went bad somehow, so i borrowed a friends, and it still came on, so it isnt that either. Checked the timeing, and it is all good, until the light comes on. When the knock sensor sends a bad signal the ECU retards the timing so this whole time it has been running sluggish. It also comes on and off sometimes. When it does go off it only lasts for maybe 30 sec's, and it usually seems to go off when i'm givin it alot of gas and the rpm's are high (probably above 3500). I know the knock sensor can be set off by pinging or a thrown rod or some other type of excessive engine clatter, since that is what it is supposed to do, but i dont have any of that. I was told on pirate4x4 by someone that i could have a bad egr valve, since an egr vlave controls ping at cruise. Is this a possible cause? I mean my car does have 180K on it and i have no idea if it has ever been replaced. I need help bad here i'm runnin out of idea's.

You can also read the other thread i have on pirate4x4 here http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=430439 , but no one there was to much help....

Did you test with wiring between the KS and the ECU? That could deffinately be causing your problems. Only way to really check is to remove the TB and get our meter in there and ground out the right pin on the ECU. It could just be a bad wire.

i tested a section the wire and it was fine. No cutts or antyhing. I also tested it with an ohmeter. What i really want to know is if anybody thinks it is possible for something else to set of the knock sensor, but not bring up another code?

Cool

Still the sensor, the wire, or the ECU...
Toyota OBD-I doesn't throw codes for knocking, just when the knock sensors short, or the resistance goes out of range (Well... same thinga ctually, but that's splitting hairs!).

All anybody can tell you is check check & recheck that wire & the new knock sensor. Are you sure you repaired the right knock sensor?

It happens all the time. 90% of the time it's the wiring.
On my 3vz-fe, I had both knock sensors dead at the same time in the last year. One was wiring, the other wase the sensor. I hot on ebay & bought a used 3vz-e knock sensor LoL! Worked just peachy!

Thank yooooou truckers LoL!

Isnt there only one knock sensor on the 3.0 v6? It is in the intake valley between the two heads in the block under the intake manifold, right? That is the one i replaced. Is there another?

Maybe there is a problem with the connector that attaches the harness to the KS wire? I'd check the KS wire again and I'd shake it around when you are testing it to see if there is a short that is intermitant. That will deffinately throw off the ECU if the signal is intermitant.

i really hope that it isnt the plug that plugs into the KS because i really dont want to have to take apart the whole intake again. I will try wiggling the wire around to see if it flickers on and off. If that doesnt work i think i am just going to have to take it in to the dealership.... man that is goin to cost way to much money that i dont have.

Hold off on going to the dealer...check the connection and clean it well. The dealer that did my hg under the recall had to do the knock sensor twice. He forgot to clean out the connector. Same symptoms here...CEL comes on after about 50 miles, throws a CEL code, and runs like a 3.0 with really bad mileage. Let us know how it goes.

well there is only two connectors that i can even clean or check. One is the connector that connects to the knock sensor, and the other is the connector that connects to the wire harness. I replaced the section of wire between the knock sensor and the wire harness with a new piece from toyota so i dont see why the connection would be bad down there. I quess i will play with the connection into the wire harness and see if that changes anything. With the way the check engine light comes on and off sometimes it really seems like it is something like that.

I just replaced the engine and the old engine didnt have a knock sensor at all, just the wire and plug dangling there. I have no explanation for this since the truck wasnt running when i got it. I didnt realize what the plug was for at the time but now with the new engine in its running like crap and giving a knock sensor trouble code. I guess i"ll figure out exactly where it screws into the block once i get it tommorrow.
