the truck runs good on the highway, on the video, I am pushing and holding the pedal down and as you can see the rpms goes up and down. it sure look like I am doing it but I am not. however, I found out the PAIR reed valve makes a clicking noise and when i take off the little vacuum hose, it stop right away.

Could this be a rev limiter issue??? Just wondering if this could also have an ignition issue. I beleive where your at in Willits, which is NorCal, the smog test will consist of 2 idle speed test which is where the tech only idles the engine and not on a roller system, dyno machine, like here in SoCal.
Hey Citrus, I also have my smog licence, here in SoCal we have to have the Advanced Emmisions licence. Dont remember if Sacramento requires the Advanced or just Basic.

Definitely fix the problem with the vacuum, throttle, etc BEFORE you take it for another smog test anywhere.

It depends on what county you live in. Some don't require a dyno. As a smog tech you should know this. Just enter the VIN and the computer tells you which test is required, dyno (enhanced) or static (basic). Some counties only require a smog when you change ownership.

To the original post.
Have you ohm tested the TPS? Checked its sweep? That would be a good place to start. Check out the FSM for specs and which terminals to check.

Smog problem too!

I took my 86 4runner to a smog station in socal on Friday and the tech said my timing was advanced to high so when he went to adjust it he jumped the larger yellow test plug (the one with 3 wires in the back) not the smaller one (the one with 2 wires in the back) and the engine died and now it will not start. He replaced the coil and cap and rotor. Now he is saying it is a different problem and it must have been pre existing! Does anyone have any idea what he could have done? Any help please. Sorry to thread on someone else's thread!

ok!!!!!! update: I have put a new thermostat, check all the hoses, and took it for a cruise....I was driving on the road and ones the rpms come to 2500, it does the same thing, like that engine wants to die. I also found that this valve makes this loud clicking noise, as soon I take the small vacuum hose, it stop.

If you don't feel up to ohm testing your TPS at least disconnect it and try it.
