Just "Clicks" sometimes I try to start it.

Sometimes in the morning when it is a little a little cool (50-65 F) and when i get out of school (85-90 F). I have plenty of battery life (brand new battery). I have a 2 Sony Xplod 12's with a 1200W amp, running through 8gauge wire. I dont know if the system would cause this problem, but it is quite annoying. Usually when it clicks i wait a few secs and try again, turn the key all the way to lock and try again, run the truck down through all the gears and back to park (AT), but most of hte time i jsut get "click" . I am starting to get annoyed at this, especially when I am trying to start it and my friends are walking by laughing at the "click". BTW it is a 88 V6, AT. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

searching will have all your answers, but go to 4crawler.com he has a rebuild kit that should fix the problem.

mine was doing the same for awhile. first i just assumed it was a loose ground wire. but after checking most of them. still had the problem so i went ahead and replaced the starter (mine was 14 yrs old anyway) and problem solved. there is a great tech write up on here for it too. Hope that helps

just did the starter rebuild. its super easy. the only hard part was getting the starter out. thankfully i have a 1" body lift which made it easier. one hint, since you have the 3.0, is that it helps to take the header heat sheild off first its only 2 bolts and frees up a lot more room.

well if the starter eventually turns the motor over with full force get a new one... if you always have to jump it when it does this it's the battery... or I should say your amp...

my bet (happens occasionally on our racer) is that the starter is contacting. Best way to adjust the attitude of said starter is with a hammer and a few HARD whacks. It's a little bit more difficult on a lowered street racing 944, but it's still not overly difficult.

just replace the starter, i had the exact same problem. click click. then it would start. starter was the problem. put in the new starter and no more click.

if you can rebuild it do it i guess. i have no idea how to rebuild one and i didnt know you could just buy the parts. i payed like 130 for a new toyota one from the guy i bought my truck from. and he put it in for me so i didnt have to mess with it. he was a toyota tech and did hundreds of these things and he said mine was the most difficult one hes ever done.

Is there any corrosion on the terminals? Before spending any money, I would try disconnecting the terminals, scraping/cleaning them really good, and make sure you reconnect them good and tight. Scrape them with a wire brush if possible, using some baking soda mixed with water, and let it sit for a bit. Rinse off with water, then reconnect.

My 4runner did the same thing, click click, start. Snatched(Well Wiggled, Jerked, Stood on Head, Held Tongue Just Right) starter out, filed off carbon off of contacts threw( pushed, cramed, pleaded, prayed) it back in, start everytime!
