Yeah, my wife and the dogs waited at the bottom. She said "no way" to going up Lion's back, especially with the dogs. So, she waited at the bottom and got some pictures. In fact, you can see the dogs running around on the sand when I'm coming back down.

what actually happens is you get more backpressure on the low end due to poor exhaust gas velocity.

the whole idea is to get exactly the right size. not too big not to small. u want the gas to flow freely, but the pipe cant be so big that the gas doesnt get pushed straight out and stays inside and kinda swirls around. you want it to go straight out, no "side to side" type movement. however, if the pipe is too small, not all the gas can even get into the pipe and it starts to build up and not flow enough.
