How much am i lookign at fro nkg's from the stealership and mabey an o2 sensor

Don't buy one at the stealership if you can help it. Figure out how to wire in an X wire 02 sensor.. they're almost all made by Bosche. Every now and then I see good deals on ebay.

The only way I know to tell is to see if it dithers - moves back and 4th across .5v when the truck is heated up. There's a test procedure in the FSM.

You can try pulling the O2 sensor and soaking it in throttle body cleaner. Just be sure it's safe for your application.

I've heard of this improving mileage, but it never did anything for me.

Oh, and be sure to use some copper sealant on reinstallation...don't want any leaks.

I've been having the same problem with my (new to me) 93 dlx 4wd pickup. It has a 22r-e, 5spd and I'm only getting 14 mpg too, even empty with tailgate down. It's totally stock as far as I know. The thing is, it starts right up, runs smooth, has plenty of power and getup in 1st-3rd, but feels like it weakens out in 4th and 5th, especially going up a grade. Even up a slight grade on the highway, I either have to almost floor it, or downshift to 4th--even a much milder grade than I think you should need to downshift on. You said it right, when you said it just makes you mad. As much as I like my Toyota, if I'm going to only get 14 mpg, I'd rather have a 3/4 ton with a v-8. I also have an 88 2wd with a carburated 22r (same displacement) and 175k on it and it still gets 27-28 mpg. 14 mpg sucks for a 4 cylinder. I'm getting to where I avoid driving it, and just drive my rusted out 88 most of the time. I started reading these threads and found out I'm not alone, so I feel a little better. But what can we do? I also have checked whatever I can think of to check. But I do have the same black soot issue going on too. It often spits drops of black liquid from the tailpipe when it is cold until it warms up. And often when I shut down and get out, I can smell a coolant smell, but there is no leaks and the coolant level never changes-strange. But if I can't solve this mileage problem, I'm probably going to dump this Toyota and get something with a V-8 that's worth 14 mpg. Any Ideas?

Generally, a screwed 02 sensor or a coolant temp sensor that always reads cold can both make you run rich. You can check the output of both.

Other than that, what tires and gears does your 93 have?
Will it roll easily on a flat surface? Bearings/brake/other issues that might create more drag?

Well your power issue, or lack there of, on grades is very normal. This engine only make 116 hp, and thats at 6200rpm, IIRC.

I would check your o2 sensor. And another food for thought is how harsh you accelerate, I have found there isnt much gained by accelerating hard, only greater fuel burn, its a slow truck at 1/4 or full throttle.

seem like you just replace them at mile intervals no check?

Just saw posting, Rebuilt 22re. Prior to rebuild was about 18.6 mpg with 188k. With new clutch, and injector cleaning.
First 500 miles was about 15.2 mpg, O2 sensor crapped out (melted) was replaced after that and a tank and a half later 16.4. That was 3 weeks ago for sensor, and 1 week for first tank fill up after O2 replacement.
Mileage seems to be going back up, 1500 mile check up at machine shop will happen sometime in January, 1990 4x4, 31's BFGs. I'm at 750 miles after rebuild.

My 93 dlx pickup is pretty much stock. It has plain street tires (235/75R15) my best calculation is that it has stock (I think) 4.1 gears on an open differential (I counted the shaft revs.) , the brakes are good, theyre adjusted and not dragging, I can push it around my garage easily, the clutch is tight and doesn't slipI know it's not stuck in 4wd, the hubs are free, and I keep it to 65 max., and I don't accelerate like a speed demon. I'll buy the power issue on a grade but the 13-14 mpg is hard to swallow. Like I said, I'd rather have a full size v-8 and only get 13 or 14 mpg. Otherwise she runs real smooth and quiet: absolutely no signs of any maladjustment in the driving, acceleration, starting, etc. just the mileage. It just makes me wonder.
