22RE are the pickiest engine I have ever seen on spark plugs. Mine wouldnt run expensive Bosch plugs, and I know others have had the same results with platinum... NGK or autolite cheapies...not platnium...and thats TOOO much gap... go get some NGKs from toyota, they should be gapped at factory specs, but check em... try that... you may get more out of that than you think possible..

Your gas mileage sounds low. I'm getting 18 to 19 in the city and up to 22 to 23 on the hwy.

from what my mechainc tells me is if your 02 sensor is bad, than it will throw a check engine light. if it doesn't, then you are good to go and not to worry about it. some may disagree but that is what he told me. i get really bad gas mileage too so you are not alone. i don't thing i can get more that 200 miles on a tank of gas. i have an automatic so that may be why as well.

Definetly get NGK plugs and go to sparkplugs.com and get yourself a new O2 sensor, they are supposed to get replaced every 100,000 or somthing like that.

Actually thats about right, these 22re's arent economy engines, you would be lucky to get 18, thats what I get, if you were hoping for 20+ mpg, you bought the wrong vehicle! The origional sticker says 16mpg city, and 18mpg hwy, if i am not mistaken, i know it wasnt more than that!

hmm well ill go buy some ngk's tomarrow and i think i am gonna hold off on the o2 sensor since it aint too cheap. Is it most likely i will have to adjust the gap? and does a .031 gap sound about right? Thats what hayes says and my current ones are way off from that at .038 any input on the gapp for the 22re

I have gotten 24.5 miles a gallon a couple of times from my 22RE powered truck. It has 31s and 4.56 gears. I have been getting a lot of tanks with 21 or better for the past few months. The only way I could get 14 is if I drove 85 mph all the time and did jackrabbit starts. There is something wrong with your truck's engine....

Damn I check mileage every fill up, since I bought my 98 3.4 v6 auto. I average 17.9-18.9 consistently almost all city, I recently did the deckplate mod and took a 2 hour drive 100 miles out of town, I filled up right before jumpin on the highway, cruised 70mph most the way and at 100.1 miles i only put in 4.1 galons to top it off, thats over 24mpg, you could say i was stoked on that trip.

I would change the gap on the plugs you have first and see what you get. In my experience, changing plugs usually doesn't make a huge difference. If they're gapped right and aren't worn out, I don't think you'll see much difference. The O2 sensor CAN make a big difference, however. You can get an original Denso or really good aftermarket NGK from www.sparkplugs.com (previously posted above) for @ 80-90 bucks.

HOWEVER, the first thing I would do is check for correct timing, spark gap & and VACUUM LEAKS before I spend a bunch of $$$ on other stuff.

Just get the plain old NGK plus, its what run best in a 22RE. They are like 1-1.50 at the dealership..I think..If you get them at the dealership you shouldnt have to regap them, but you can have the dealership check them for you...most are willing to do that.

O2 sensors can go bad without throwing a code, if they compleatly fail they would throw a code. You can remove it and clean it with some O2 sensor safe EFI cleaner. Thats what I did to mine.

Looks like you read about the wrong vehicle...

1989 4runner
SR5 4WD
City (mpg) 19
Highway (mpg) 22

The pickups are slightly lower ironically, must be aerodynamics...when the runners went away from a glass top the mileage dropped..

as you can tell from everyone elses posts his is fairly low for a stock RE....

Well you know what I was just trying to help....I did a full tuneup on my truck and i didnt get any different gas mileage, also did o2 sensor, thats how i get 18mpg now (16+2), I also have an exhaust system and it helped a little bit, I didnt really check before the exhaust because the exhaust system was bad when I bought the truck

Hmmm, like i said, i didnt know if i was mistaken or not, I know that these trucks arent economy trucks though!! I think some of you can agree with me on that one!!!

Also to answer your question, get NGK plugs and most of the time they are already gapped for certain applications, mine were. I would also replace the Cap, rotor, and sparkplug wires...later you can do the 02 sensor, I had to replace mine, it turned my check engine light on, and my truck idled like crap!!! It was a safety hazard, it could have stalled in the middle of an intersection or something!!! o2s are one of those things you dont fix if it aint broken. You might see a little bit of a gain from the 02 but i dont think it would be too much different, you can also try a K&N drop in filter, I have heard only good from those! In fact its my next mod, if not the FIPK!!

Well also my engine needs to be rebuilt I burn through about a half a quart of oil every 3 days and my truck runs rich... (black smoke + in front of a convertable= mad rich people )

Roger that. My city mileage aint' so great, mabye 16-18 depending. But no load on the highway, I can get pretty close to a 27mpg average in my '87 carbed 22R. And this is on 30's. I am pretty fanatic about keeping things tuned and timed though, and I ˟˟˟˟˟foot the peddle a lot.

hmmm well got my ngk iridium plugs today and they seem to work good i lost the little hesitation i had but that was probably because they crappy autolite planitums the last owner had in there were gaped between .038 and .04. Yes they came gaped at .o31 but i did have to gap one that was a little high.

I already just got a new cap and rotor and wires as my truck was rebuitl 1200 miles ago. Ill se how it does now. I also realized that when i got 15 mpg i changed my fuel filter right in the middle of the tank so only half was on the new one so it may have only helped half the time.

I am work on also making a intake for my truck using the FIPK but custom bending a all 3 inch aluminized intake that goes all the way to the throttle body and rids of the crapy black flex hose thing at the end that hurts flow. Not the metion the dumb 2 inch plastic tube as well. Ill post up some pics when im done. I am going the use the stock box to start with it to start and well see. I already have the k&n drop in filter.

94 4runner v6 4wd 192k miles changed plugs, wires , cap and rotor, ran seafoam prior to changing the plugs. Getting about 14mpg . Is it time for a new o2 sensor? Also I have a small hole in my muffler, is this the problem?

Oh also my o/d does not light up on my dash , either button position on/off.
Is the o/d working?

Any ideas on that?

Thanks
