Ok i havent had my runner for very long. Its a 87 and i hadn't calculated my mileage befor now. I have had it for about 2 months and its has a fully rebuilt 22re and i recently put a new fuel filter in. I have noticed that i had never gotten a tank of gas where i felt like i got decent mileage. This time i set the trip metter when i filled it all the way up. I got to exactly 200 miles and the fuel light came on. So i stoped and filled her all the way up. I was able to put in 15.1 gallons. I have 31 inch tires and figured that i got only 14 MPG!!!! its almost humiliating for a 22re. I have the top off too right now and the sunroof out but i dont think i should be at 14mpg. What could be wrong and what can i do 14 mpg just plain makes me mad.

Well if you have 31's your speedo will be off. Stock tires are 225/75/15, which has a rolling diameter of 27.5" , your 31's have a rolling radius of 29.8 (all info by BFG at 45mph), So your speedo is 8.4% off, thus you actually got about 15.2mpg. Better than you thought but not great... how new is the engine, sometimes it take many thousands of miles for the engine to stop breaking in and get optimal mileage.

i have a much more efficient 1997 2.7liter. I get 16 to 18 mpg......you ain't doing so bad with 14.

ya exactly 14 is down right horrible for and 4 cylinder motor. I only have abotu 1000 miles on my motor. But there has to be something wrong when a 22re thats is fresh is geting 15 mpg.

no my timing is good and everythign was adjusted /check 200 miles ago. Valves adjusted, timing, checked for codes ...etc.

Even though it's a 22re...it's pushing a 4runner, which isn't a light truck.

On a pickup, 4x4 , we average 18-22 highway. I get about 19/20 hwy and that's with 31's, new engine, new exhaust, cold air intake filter setup.

4runners get worse mileage than the pickups.

I've always read on here that 4runners get sucky mileage.

hmm after hearign that mabey i am at wherer i am spose to be but i have always thoguh that pickups or 4runners with a 22re should be around 20mpg

now that i am thinkign abotu it yesterday befor i filled up i was pretty low and the fuel light was on and it turned out i was able to put 15.1 gallons in so i had 2.1 left? But as i slowed at the light right befor the fuel station my truck backfired really loud and then died. I though i was out of fuel because it was ahrd to start back up but it did. I only have stock exhuast. As well. Coudl thsi be anything?

just another data point here. i have calculated milage for several gas tanks now on my 85 4runner, reman 22re, top on and off, no loads, all stock. all around 20-21 mpg.

i think a new 22re should do much better than 15 mpg. maybe i will think otherwise after i get some lift and larger tires. go throught the basics (i'm sure you have already), good wires and plugs, good oil including differentials xfer and trans cases, good pcv valve, check all vaccum hoses and meter connections, drive train and wheel lube...

and use good fuel to keep the injection system clean. if you gas up at the cheapest place in town, throw a can of BG44 into the tank, and then only refill with chevron/techron or other good stuff. i am a firm believer that the extra 10 cents per gallon will save me time and money later.

my dad has a 86 4runner. 22re with 31's but re geared to 4.56. he get about that. it all depends on how and where you drive. in town that is the best you will get. i get 12 with my 3.0 but on the freeway i get 18 so if you are driving all town that is normal.

i get around 250 miles on 31 BFGs per fillup thats when the light gos on due to the sending unit not working

i don't care what you guys say, 14mpg is just plain unacceptable with a 22RE. my highly built, gas chugging, V6 spanking hybrid gets 17-18, and my 22RE with a performance head and cam gets 20 with 30" tires.

thats what i think as well as my thread title kind of states. i here of peopel getting 15 with 33 12.5s' with horrible motors. My friend would be ones of these people.

I used to get 17-18 with my 95 and 32's, then I went to 33's and stayed the same...then I put a TRD Stage II cam in and it dropped to 15 at best...usually 13-15...
The only time I ever broke 20 on my 95 was the first road trip I did, the rig was new to me and I didnt cruise more the 3000rpm about 69 mph... then it only got 21mpg with 31's.

My 92 with 35 or 33's is 18-21, except on the fwy where its 16-18.....

what type of weight do you carry around? Do you drive it like you stole it? Also what type of spark plugs are you running? It could be that the motor isnt broken in yet. Was it a stock rebuild or performance?
