first test
15mph
(%co2 14.5)
(%o2 .2)
(HC {max 135} {Ave 43} meas 42)
(co {max .87} {Ave .14} meas .11)
(NO {max 740} {Ave 238} meas 1031)
25 mph
(%co2 14.6)
(%o2 .0)
(HC {max 115} {Ave. 35} meas 22)
(co {max 1.08} {Ave. 0.16} meas 0.07)
(NO {max 642} {Ave. 208} meas 754)
failed 15 and 25mph on NO2
My Cat is only a year old. I replaced the Oxy sensor with a Denso OEM. I noticed the exhaust didn't smell as bad after so I was hopeful.

second test
15mph
(%co2 14.0)
(%o2 .4)
(HC {max 135} {Ave 43} meas 106)
(co {max .87} {Ave .14} meas .50)
(NO {max 740} {Ave 238} meas 1662)
25 mph
(%co2 14.7)
(%o2 .0)
(HC {max 115} {Ave. 35} meas 27)
(co {max 1.08} {Ave. 0.16} meas 0.14)
(NO {max 642} {Ave. 208} meas 795)
failed 15 and 25mph on NO2 again, but worse
I don't think I can get E85 in my town. Does anyone out there have any advice? Can vacuum leaks alone cause this. I'm guessing my levels went up with the O2 sensor because I had pre-exiting conditions that are amplified by a better working sensor. I found a big crack in the boot to the TB. I tried to seal it with rubber glue. That's all I've got so far.

Check your EGR and egr system, thats the most common reason for high NOx.
Make sure the engine is going into closed loop, so your o2 sensor is operating. The cat wont work right if your o2 sensor isnt working right. Check / backprobe your o2 sensor once the engine is warmed to verify its in closed loop ( oscilating voltage) and is not biased rich or lean. The service manual will tell you all the test procedures.

I just looked up the part number for my Magnaflow Catalytic Converter and found out it's a 49 state model. CA legal from Magnaflow is about $500. Ouch! Where do you guys buy yours in CA?

I just got my Tundra to pass, Long Tubes and caps off cats cut up to fit 2.5" tubing. I make mufflers, I could you make you a special muffler,.
Haha, basically I would take a cat and hide it inside of a muffler. If you install it as close to your other cat as possible I'd bet it would clean up whatever is the problem. Especially if it was a cat off a newer truck. You might not pass because it's too clean, you'd have to hollow out your stock cat. Idk, just a thought.
Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.
I wonder if there's another cat inside of that muffler???????????????

I don't think the magnaflow would prevent you from passing, even if it is "49" state legal. I had my cat stolen prior to moving to CA and put on a 49 state legal one, still passed smog on my 92 22re 4x4 DLX pickup.

well they SOMETIMES look for the codes on the cat mostly if it looks new..... i have gotten away with ebay cats before and have gotten a fail because the 50 state legal cat was upside down and the codes were ontop and could not be seen from the bottom.

Yes your absolutely right. My Colorado plates threw them off i'm sure, the smog tech guy thought it was stock too. I used some oxidation techniques to make it look like an older cat, as I was paranoid about failing .

I wouldnt suggest you move out of california because you arent passing smog check.I can think of 100 other valid reasons to leave that place but smog check aint one of them. Please check your fuel pressure regulator. When the diaphragm breaks they go rich. Also check the obvious, vac leaks etc., but the fuel pressure regulator is a big culprit. We know the cat is working because it cleans up nox and co,so yours is now just an hc prob. Also look for injector o ring leaks as they dry out with age.

3vzs are a pita to smog. my last one i just rubbed a bunch of mud on the cat to make it look old. figured they wouldnt want to dig through the mud and clean it to see if it was ca legal.
