weird, cause when the truck is in 2wd and running it should be vacuum on the 2wd side and the sleeve should be away from the hole that the sensor goes in, the only time that sensor should be getting pushed on is in 4wd. and that's when the sleeve should be sliding over to where the hole is for the 4wd. ok i found it... .here is the add manual for the 4wd system.this should help and i think im going to try and see if someone will lock it on this site too for others,

TY for the info and link. I will check that later.
So what is the proper order of how it works?
Shift Shifter to 4wd > Sends Elec. Signal to Turn VSV Blue On > Creates Vac and Locks 4wd Fork/Tube > Pushes Button on Idicator Sensor Lighting 4wd Dash Light
It almost seems as though I have a break somewhere. If I push the indicator sensor in it switches the VSVs back and forth.

u forgot the relay. so it goes from switch in transfer case to relay to the svs to switch the vacuum then to the switch on front end. then the light will go on when all is working right.

I still have not figured out whats up with the truck. The 4wd is working but the light is still flickering. The driveshaft unlocks when I shift to 2wd but both front wheels stay engauged if you understand what I mean. Another odd thing is that the 4wd light will go solid if I cut the steering wheel slightly to the right or if Im going up hill while heavy on the gas pedal. Im gonna mess with this more when I get some time, but it did get me through the last snow we had.

Ted-do you still need pictures?
I just had to fix my 4 wheel drive on my 93 4runner 5 speed v6. I found everything from the transfer case switch, dash relay that hooks up the dash light and switches the vacuums from 2x to 4x4. Let ne know. I can send you some. Send me a email to link them to.

If the light goes solid when you turn, you have a short somewhere. I'm betting the wire to the diff switch.
As I posted previously, I had a flashing 4WD light & fast clicking from the under-dash relay, & it was some type of short caused by my center transmission support being loose (dropped @ 3/4"). Sounds EXACTLY like what you have going on, so I'm sticking with a short.

Greetings,
I'm trying to locate "where" under the dash the ADD relay is. My front end will not engauge, but the rear does gear down in 4L and I have no light. My current rig is a 90 Runner 3.0L Auto. I have a 91 Runner 22RE 5spd parts donor truck that I tear into before tearing into my daily driver. All the 4x4 stuff worked great on the 91.

I have since sold my 4runner. When I fixed it. The problem turned out to be the switch on top of the transfer case. I remember it looking like a ball bearing on one side. And a wire coming out from it. Accessed from the passenger side underneath. In your case I would check the vacuum lines. You can manually check the lines like this: Go to the front axle and find both the lines. If it's in 2wd one line will pull air by feeling it with your finger. Put the transfer case into 4wd and Then switch those lines and see if it engages the 4wd- meaning light and everything works. If it goes into 4wd and your light cones on It is most likely your switch. However can not guarantee this will fix it. But it does eliminate alot of possibilities. I got my switch from a pick n pull and think it was around $8 when I replaced my. I think this would be the best place to start for eliminating possibilities of other problems.
Dont forget to put the lines back on the axle to the way they were when you fix or after you figure it out.
Good luck

I have fixed the problem with a $10 "fuel pump relay" from the junkyard. That is what the relay had printed on the side of it. I had first called Toyota and they wanted something like $130 for it. I told them.... "Don't bother."

hey TNRabbit...i just picked up a 92 4runner for my 16 year old boys first rig and exact same problem you are describing happened on the test drive. The seller notified me of the issue but when put in 4wd the 4wd engages but the light flashes and I hear a clicking sound. Do you have any more info or a pic of the bolt you are referring to? Thanks!
