yeah, do recall that the plastic casing is what allows the cable to spin within and not bind on anything. its very hard because its a friction part. cutting it would not be advisable...

I just opened up my dash as well. Its getting easier now each time. It now takes 20 min to get the cluster out including the time to wash my eye out after getting mud in it crawling under the truck to get at the other end of the speedo cable. Loosen that off and your life will be a lot easier.
I like how simple our trucks are.

well i had the ame prob in my 90 p/u and it squeeked and chirped for over 2 years the cable ended up binding up and twisting off in the housing as well as stripping out the the speed gear

It took me hours the first time til I realized that you could loosen off the speedo cable from the T-case and feed it towards and through the bulkhead.I keep loosing screws so my dash is attached with a little luck and about 4 screws.
I wet at it today and sprayed the cable with graphite until it started to run out the T-case end. I then took apart the cluster and lubed all the gears I could get at. Afterwards I packed the socket where the cable plugs into the cluster with MP grease. See how it goes.

Here's the genius part. You grab the end of the cable (we'll call it the "bit" as in screw driver bit) and pull it out about 3/4" (that's as far as it goes). Now that the "bit" it out of the way, you can stick one of those red straws/nozzles down it to spray in graphite lube. I was rather proud of myself for figuring that out.

So far it's worked, but it only lasted a month last time when I tried lubing the cable. I didn't figure out to pull the cable out of the sheath 1" last time, so I'm doubtful much got in though.

mine goes crazy when its cold out sometimes right around 60. it screams something hellish, and the needle bounces +/- 5-7 MPH. actually pretty crazy to look at.
