Engine Ping At Steady Throttle
#22
engine was replaced around 20,000 miles ago with a donor engine from eBay. I am burning oil, but getting the valve cover / intake plenum gaskets replaced at my friend's AAMCO shop in Fort Walton Beach, Florida this week. I have done SeaFoam in the Gas and Oil before, but I have no idea what vaccum hose to put it in the intake. But, you were definitely right ABE. : )
I had it looked over, and there is no coolant in the oil / vise versa. So, no head gasket troubles.
Odometer reads 174,235, but engine has closer to 60,000 miles on it because it was removed from a wrecked Taco.
that's fun to say... wrecked Taco.

Your old Denso cap and rotor is likely better than the 'new' jobber parts you installed. At best, it would be a lateral move. Next time, choose original parts, the Denso brand stuff will easily last you 100k miles or more.
Your mixture has also been 'adjusted' by somebody, the telltale is the silicone sealant on the AFM. Generally speaking, this is not a good thing. Also, the fact that your 3VZ has a knock sensor, and you're still pinging, indicates one of the following:
a. inadequate octane
b. excessive timing
c. mixture issues
After your 'tune up' you might want to try running 1 step more octane. If you're using 87 right now, try a tank full of 89 and see if the ping is gone. If so, you can adjust your timing back 1 degree...
HTH. YMMV.

If I were going to seafoam through the intake, I'd choose a small diameter hose connected directly to the intake. I'd also do it in several stages, stopping the engine and letting it soak for several minutes.
And I'm not right yet. We don't know that the engine is not pinging anymore.

d: oil contamination to the fuel mixture caused by worn rings, PCV valve malfunction or other issue.
but I agree, the AFM has been tampered with....

86, parts were ordered in from local dealership.
also, the AFM was replaced 2 months ago due to a malfunction on the electronics on the inside. The gate was not opening and RPM's wouldn't get above 500. I ordered a new one from O'Reiley's and had took it to the dealership to make sure it was the same as the old one. Apparently, one of the 3 foils had come separated from the board. Dealership wanted $800 for new part, O' Reilley's had it for $130...
Also, I forgot to mention that the engine is NOT pinging anymore. I'm almost 100% sure that it was due to the wire that was rubbing against the EGR and had almost worn through. It has considerably more pickup and power, and is alot smoother.
I'm not sure what How the Hell, Your Mileage May Vary has to do with it?

<gump>Life is like a container filled with used engines. You don't know if the one you got has many miles, if it was taken care of before you got it or what country made it. </gump>
