There shouldn't be notched in the rockers. If valves weren't opening enough, then that would explain tapping and possible stalling.

I'll propose that you left the engine running while the truck was on a very steep angle and the oil pickup was out of the oil pool thus you ran out of lubrication and wore trenches in the rockers.

How much of this assumption is correct? Its a bit far fetched, but in theory, it could happen.

I think some of this should be posted in that "what's the hardest you've ever worked your yota" thread... I know it's (somewhat) not jungle_runner's fault, but it's kind of funny none the less. Were this any other car forum, if someone had just accidentally driven off a 3-foot ledge, there would be pictures of the carnage.

On this site, someone drives off a 3-foot ledge, and "oh, my truck runs a little funny after that... what the hell!"... hahaha

holy crap JR! i feel like i just read a best selling novel! what an adventure!

i give you mad props man. to tear into that motor away from home, and keep on digging until you were able to resolve the issue, THEN to actually draw a very likely conclusion about the cause...all i can say is wow. freakin' EXCELLENT work my man. i'm really happy you got it all taken care of. impressive indeed.

so how many miles since your rebuild? did you clear that hesitation? you feel like a toyota man for life now? hehe

thanx for the great thread with pics and information. it's true, that this site, with contributions from people just like you, is what gives others the confidence that they can handle repairs themselves. everything i know about toyota i learned here.
