Code 71 EGR
Hi, 95 Toyota 4WD 6 cylinder pickup. 71 engine code after having a shop do a valve cover gasket replacement. The shop said I needed an EGR. Tested the vacuum modulator, was fine. Replaced EGR with another shop. Check engine light came back on tonight after wasting $400. Hoses have been cleaned, Have wasted hundreds on this, need to pass emissions in September. Any ideas? Thank you.

One shop said you need "an EGR," and you went to another shop to have them replace the EGR (valve, I assume)? That didn't work out too well. Who do you complain to?

Your code is being set because the flow from the EGR valve to the plenum isn't "hot" (< 55°C). I'm told the outside of tube should feel "warm," not hot. In addition to checking the operation of the valve (just because it's new doesn't mean it's working) and the modulator and vacuum lines, check the plenum too. The EGR gas input is near the PCV input, and on mine the tube that extends into the plenum was covered with "gunk." If bad enough, it would block the tube. The tube should slide out; if you feel resistance, it's probably covered in stuff.

Thanks, not really looking to complain, just trying to see if I can DIY and get to the bottom of it. The last shop said they cleaned all hoses except for one that goes into the throttle body, and one with a bend in it that's beneath the valve cover that would require removing all of that. When that didn't seem to fix it, replaced EGR valve. Appreciate the info and diagram, I'll tear into it when it's not 100 degrees outside. I have until September to pass emissions, then they're getting rid of it next year.
