they make air mattresses to fit the ext cab 4x4 pickups (which is a shortbed) and with the seats folded down, the same air mattress fits the 1st generation 4runners.
it also is Molded AROUND the wheel wells

I don't know how you guys can sleep in the back of a 1st gen 4runner. I tried it a month ago with a coleman twin air mattress, fit pretty good, but with the tailgate shut (it was raining or else I would've left it open) I was really cramped, like I couldn't stretch out.. got hardly any sleep.. not to discourage you from doing this, I just want to know if anyone else thought the back of the 4runner was a little cramped.

i have a 2nd gen 4 door 4runner so it's a little larger.
first thing i did when i got my 4runner here was roll the rear window down, fold the seats flat, and lay in the back to see if i could sleep back there if need be....and much to my surprise..i was comfy on the stock hard floor....although i have back problems, and my bed cost a healthy $5000 (nothing special really...not that memory foam stuff )....and even after that...sometimes i still end up sleeping on the floor just because of my back lol
btw i'm 6ft tall, roughly 215lbs.

I mean, who goes camping sober anyways?

I am 6' and my wife is 5' 9", we have slept in the 4runner with the dog, even ( she is small, curled up in the drivers seat).
My wife is a bit of a priss, so she complained a little, but once she fell asleep, she slept fine. I slept great, but I can sleep anywhere.
Anyway, yeah, a double fits, you will sleep fine, especially if you're alone, if you use the double, and not the truckbed you have 2 extra spots on both sides to put stuff by the wheel wells.

I also use the futon matters. Very comfortable. I ganked an extra switch out of my parts runner to install in the back to put the window up from in the back with the truck off.

We load the tent at the back of the truck/4runner. Set up the tent, connect the "tunnel" that seals the truck to the tent, and then unload your gear into the tent. Now, you have the full bed and tailgate to sleep and an enclosed area for all your gear. It looks like this from the truck to the tent:
