im in the middle of dropping a 4.3 vortec "W" i picked up for $400 into my 92 4runner. i started the the same way with a blown head gasket on the 3.0l got it apart and thought who in their right mind would put there time and money rebuilding such a crap motor that isnt even that impressive brand new. i looked around and found the 4.3 was going to be easiest for me since i already have a vehicle i can strip parts from. i have a 4.3 with 200k on it in my s-10 and its still strong so ill use that. anyway thats my take on it ill let you know if i run into any issues
chaos, do you have a build thread? going to start one? take alot of pics.
Yes, please keep me posted.

i dont have a thread yet but there are a ton on here for the swaps. alot of them are step by step. i have been taking pictures the whole time ill post them. if i run into anything major ill let you know. so far pretty easy if u stay with the yota trans. if u put a chevy one in there you have to do all kinds of drive train mods that im not up for right now. im using mine as a daily driver so i dont need to go crazy just simple.

I am seeing what you mean.
Why anyone would WANT to work on this engine is beyond me.
I am thinking of pulling it and looking at installing something else. Now if the 3.4L engine is anything like this, forget that too.
Jerry (92Toy), I see what you mean about something always in the way trying to remove the intake, something alse connected to it.

Phil,
I know you checked out my rebuild thread some time ago. What really helped me decide what to do was to make a spredsheet, listing all the options and estimaed cost of each.
Ultimately, I went back to a 3.0, only because I got lucky and found one much cheaper than getting a 3.4. After machining the crank, new bearings, pistons, water pump, head gaskets, timing belt etc., it's been running strong for 30k miles.
I just pulled up my spreadsheet, and the total cost of the engine alone was just under $900. That cost included a battery and a clutch kit.

thats cheaper than anything i have found.
yes i did check out your thread because i read about everything on these 3.0L. Where'd you get the parts from for the rebuild (without me re reading the entire thread)?

It's hit and miss with B&R
We have ordered engines from them before, and several have come filled with water, rust, or a myriad of other things. They leave the engines outside, and then pressure wash them before they send them out. (Spaldings does the same thing). We have gotten a few decent ones, but generally they are from newer cars.

B & R is one of the few places with used 3.4L at a decent price. They also list compression numbers. What are good comp. numbers for the 3.4L?
I do not know what my local market has for selection. I will check it out.

After a trip to my local DMV, I have discovered that my county here in Nevada is worse than most places. A date was not given, but "about a year ago" the restrictions governing engine swaps have been limited to "your manufacturer only".
Restrictions will include pictures of the vehicle, vin #, block #. In other words, proof. I must file this information with my DMV and "hope" for a favorable ruling. Otherwise i most probably will do a 3.0L swap (large, long, loud exasperated sigh). I hate smog nazis. Maybe I should move to another county.
So, here are my questions. All I can think of now....
1) My 88 4Runner is fuel injected and OBD I.
What other "light duty" engines in V6 or I6 configuration are out there?
2) I know the T100's had the 3.4L before the 4Runners and Tacomas.
Did any T100 pick ups have the 3.4L and a designation of OBD I?
3) Were all 3.4L engines labeled OBD II?
Any and all suggestions. I just thought of doing an I6 swap with a 7MGE.
Does anyone know what years these engines were in Supras-Cressidas?
EDIT, I searched and found out, 86-92.
Thanks, Phil Delfino

I bought a rebuilt 3.0 shortblock from eBay it transferred heads from my previous motor (which was practically new). This cost me about $1000 it it works just fine.
But, like you said, its still a 3.0 so this is why sooner or later I will swap in the 1UZFE Lexus v8 4.0L. If you haven't seen it yet, its amazing (youtube it). There's an entire buildup thread in the engine swap section of this site.... good thread but not a cheap swap, upwards of $2200 but at least it bolts right up to the tranny.

If you've got access to a trailer/dolly it's worth a look at surrounding areas on Craigslist. The 3.0s don't have the best rep, but I think they're a reliable, torquey engine, and they sell cheap. Got 250k on mine, and just picked up an entire body damaged (and noisy 3rd member) 3vze 4runner with 139K on it for $400. It's worth more than that in scrap, with loads of other good parts, and now I've got a backup engine. I'll probably do a teardown to be safe with it, but... point is there are some good deals out there on the 3.0s.
