90 4Runner/22RE Bigger Exhaust?

I am thinking of doing an engine swap when I change my clutch out on Thanksgiving weekend. The engine I'm looking at is a rebuilt 22RE with a performance cam, keith black pistons, and oversized valves. The guy who rebuilds them says he recommends 2 3/4" exhaust for it to see maximum performance. Well I'v been looking into headers, I have a pacesetter on my other truck and it does a good job, after I got rid of the chronically leaky lower flange anyway, so I'm thinking of putting one on my 4Runner. The header has a 2 1/2" outlet so I'm thinking of keeping it 2 1/2" all the way back, 2 3/4" doesnt make alot of sense to me if the header has a 2 1/2" pipe. So I'v been looking around, found a cat and muffler easily enough with 2 1/2" connections, but cant find the tailpipe anywhere, I can weld it all together but I cant make the tailpipe unless I want a frankenpipe patched together with a bunch of elbows. I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can find a 2 1/2" pipe, I could go to a muffler shop and have one custom made, but I'd rather just buy one and have it ready for Thanksgiving weekend.

I put an exhaust from a beechcraft Baron after the muffler. well, really its the tip, but it looks cool, cause the pipe is a bit bigger, and it aims the exhaust at the ground. Sorry I can't really help with the problem. Maybe if I can find some more baron pipe for my 4runner, I'd be willing to ship you my old pipe from the muffler back.

Header..New Bolts...Cat..Muffler..Tip...there you go if you want it really loud go with a 14'' run full 2.25''' that well work the best i had all that on my 22re no engine work and a custom intake and for a pretty tired motor it was great pulled hard for a 4cly

Well I'd rather keep it reasonably quiet, obviously its gonna be louder, but I'm not looking for the obnoxiously loud riceburner sound that seems so popular these days, a deeper and mellower less "weedeater on steroids" like sound is fine. I dont want to have to throw another $500 into the stereo to get past the exhaust noise either lol.

So far I'm looking at getting 2 stock 2" tailpipes, welding them together (side by side), and running them off a dual outlet muffler. I'd rather have the simplicity of one 2.5" if I knew where to get one.

I'd walk away from that engine rebuilder.
Ask him how many 22R's he's done and what he bases his recommendations on.

A well built naturally aspirated 22RE might put down 125hp to the wheels with internal modifications. Do you need 2.75" of exhaust to support that kind of power?

I dont reccomend going over 2.25". I also reccommend a LCE header, much better quality. Get a LCE header, carsound (magnaflow) 2.25" cat, and a flowmaster 60 series in 2.25". It will flow like crazy and still be fairly quiet. I would also have a shop built the tailpipe, and connect the header, cat, and muffler.

I did read that thread, it does have alot of info in it for sure.

The guy that does the engine rebuilds runs a machine shop down in Oregon, and sells on ebay. I agree 2 3/4" sounds like severe overkill, I mean theres alot of V-8's running smaller exhausts than that that put out more exhaist and power than my 22RE could ever dream of. I did wonder if the guy knew what he was talking about a bit at that point in the conversation.
He does have a 99.4% positive feedback though, and thats at least some sort of guage to measure the satisfaction of his customers, maybe not a perfect one but more than you get at the average machine shop.
So I'm still thinking on that.

I do like those LCE headers, I just wish they were a bit cheaper. But compared to the turbo header they are a bargain lol.

Try to find a decent quality header (non-pacesetter). Get it ceramic coated.
99.4% feedback doesn't mean he knows a thing about Toyota motors.
I distinctly remember one individual selling "160hp" 22R/22RE motors. He did put some decent parts into them, but no way they were even close in terms of power.

I'd do my own research and tell your engine builder what you want to do. A "performance" rebuild doesn't much more than a standard rebuild.

Ted (engnbldr) sells some well proven, high quality parts... He doesn't sell KB pistons, however...

some of you may not no Lce headers are stainless steel and ceramic coated sure they cost a little more but well worth it

Yep, teriffic header and not a bad price when you look at downeys ceramic coated header, and its not stainless.
