so in conclusion the best way to determine if you have an 8" diff is to pull both axel shafts and remove the diff and then measure the ring gear diameter. unless you know the vin # but ive found that the info kyle gave is accurate .

best way to figure is to count the splines, 8" will have 30, 7.5 will have 27. i think the actual ring gear diameter is like 7.8" on the 8", but i can't remember for certain.

Differentials – Gearing

Gearing..... with a 4 banger and single case
stock 3.96 or 4.10= 31 or smaller tire
4.88=33 inch tire
5.29= 35 to 38 inch tire.
5.71= NOT RECOMMENDED FOR REAL OFFROAD USE

This is the same reason 5.71's are very weak, 6 teeth, 5.29's have 7, 4.88's and 4.38's have 8, 4.56's have 9 and 411's have 9, 410's have 10, and 390's have 10

If you have the axle code of your vehicle, it is easy to find out what size differential, what ratio, and what pinion set-up you have. This will also help if you are hunting for a particular unit off another vehicle. The axle code is in the vehicle ID plate under the hood or drivers door. The axle code is 4 digits: a letter followed by 3 numbers.

Example: F372 = 7.5" 3.58 final ratio 2 pinion

Damnit! All that tells me is my 98 SR5 has a 7.5" 2 pinion with 4.10's in it...could that be real?

so what would it be if my code reads B05A? Does that tell me what size 3rd member I have? Its off of a 97 v6 mini taco 5 lug pattern.

I know this is resurrecting an old thread but I have a third member that I was given along with a coiled rear end out of a ifs 4runner. I am trying to identify it, it has 3 ribs and casting that indicates it is a 4cylinder 3rd. But it also has 4 pinion carrier with threaded preload adjusters as supposed to shims, which seems to indicate it might be a v-6 3rd? I have read a bunch of information on identifying them but they all seem to contradict the one I'm looking at. Any info helps, thanks...

All toy 8" diffs use threaded adjusters. Some later model housings are supposed to have a different casting with different ribbing.

If it's got a 4 pinion carrier, it's certainly a 'v-6 type 3rd

Here's some good info: http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

I've checked out eriks4x4 and that's where my question stemmed from. Half way down the page on the rear end section he has a picture of the 3 styles side by side and my casting according to that is a 4 cylinder. But if you say the 4 pinion dictates that and not the casting then I guess that picture is incorrect? I appreciate the info,

Did you see this on Erics page???

'96-up 4runner V6 diffs:
- new improved housing that looks the same as the T100/Tundra/Tacoma diff on the outside, internals are all the same as the regular V6 diff
- 30 spline pinion on OEM gears, swap pinion flange to 27 spline to use aftermarket gears

I did see that, but they have a picture of the t100 housing also that looks nothing like the other two. Not trying to argue, just confused on the different info out there. Here's the link for the picture from eriks4x4 I'm talking about. I have pics of my third member but I don't know how to post it.

It is possible that a a V-6 carrier was put into a 4 cyl type housing using 'conversion' bearings.

Does anyone happen to know the specs on the different bearings? Maybe I could just measure the race or bearings and figure it out that way...

There are two different inner pinion bearing thicknesses for 'long' and 'short' pinion gears and 45mm and 50mm carrier journals. (inside diameter of the carrier bearings)

V-6 carriers have 50mm journals while 4 cyl carriers have 45mm journals.

As far as I know, all toy 8" pinion bearings are the same outside and inside diameter between 4 and 6 cyl types, just different thicknesses between types.

Carrier bearings inside either 45mm, or 50mm. Think outside diameters all the same, but can;t lay hands on some to check right now.

Here's a bunch of bearing info from ZUK:: http://www.gearinstalls.com/bearing.htm
