My 90' 4Runner had 240,000 when I sold it. It never had any engine work besides timing belt(s). It ran great but the automatic tranny was on its way out.

91 Pickup 4x4 318,000 miles no major motor work a/c blows cold original Head gaskets. rebuilt rear axle, new leaf springs, rebuilt front end control arm bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rods at 310,000 has several oil leaks needs new timing belt, dealer pushing me to do the HG recall said it would save $300.00 on the timing belt.

Wow, congratulations! Did they say how much longer the HG recall was going to last? I thought they stopped that already.

They did not I brought the truck in for the steering link recall and the service advisor called me about the HG recall, I have always be a proponent of the "if it aint broke don’t fix it " saying but I am thinking of taking advantage of the discount in labor. My main concern is what problems they might uncover when they pull the heads off.

Bought a '91 4runner for my daughter and it 'appears' to have a head-gasket problem. The local dealer verified that this job has been 'done' on this truck. I'm so frustrated I could spit !
She overheats at the drop of a hat with a new radiator and a new thermostat (drilled at 12-clock to pass air) and it gets hot easy. Also, when completely cooled down the next morning, removing the radiator cap caused some pressurized gas to escape. This doesn't seem normal to me. could the dealer who 'fixed' this on recall have just thrown in more of the 'bad' gaskets ??

Which gaskets do I need when doing this job ??? Rock ? I want the best in fact I'd like solid copper like a racer uses, but I havn't found any...

Thanks,

Brad

Oh boy! Here we go fellas!

Just to get it out of the way, and onto the record, mine went 218,000 miles before blowing the original head gasket. No other major engine work 'till around 224,000miles when I had to tear it down to replace a cracked piston. Nothing since with around 230,000 miles now. And such is not as uncommon as is popularly believed.

Do I ever have a thread for you on the 22RE vs. 3VZE reliability debate. One of my finest hours...

Enjoy!

1988 4Runner, over 234,xxx miles. Don't know how many P.O. there were on this vehicle. Does not qualify for HG recall (it's got the good ones). Owned it over 3 yrs now and have an O2 sensor into it along with a recent (this summer) water pump, fuel pump, timing belt replacement. Other than a tune up every year, timing light and timely oil changes, nothing major to this 3.0L motor.

Since we are indeed posting to this 7-8 year old thread and I missed it on the first go-round... My previous 95 t4r v6 had 183k with on 1 timing belt/water pump before I wrecked it. My current 3vze has 204k on it, and only ever timing belts and valve adjustment. Gets 15-16 mpg regularly on 87 gas. This is my 2nd 3vze and I will purchase another. Both have had head gaskets done, 1 under warranty. They are the most reliable motor I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Not so pleasurable to work on in the rare case it's necessary, but I know my way around by now.

From what I understand you need to contact a dealership and give them the VIN. They'll have a record of any recalls having been done or not. And if they haven't they'll tell you whether they still can be.

Wow, that's very flattering. How kind of you to say that. Thanks!

I'm proud to have established such a following, or atleast gained a follower, here. Maybe I really can make a difference? Love me, or hate me though? That's up to each individual to choose. Either way, there's no stopping me now. I'm on a roll!
