3.4 or 7MGE... why?
My '92 22RE is going to need re-powering sooner or later. I like to be prepared...i like the idea of a 7MGE but because 4runner is an auto I don't know if it will bolt right up to the tranny. Truck is completely rust free and very straight body...worth investment of re-powering. Or should I go 3.4?

my buddy jeremy (NCSU 4Runner) did the 7MGE the supra swap and from what he told me its A LOT more work from doing the 3.4 swap since the 3.4 virtually bolts right up compared to the 7MGE. If your looking for a project go with the 7MGE youll have 300 plus HP. the 3.4 puts out 190 but add another 50 when you do the trd supercharger.

It's not ALOT more work for a 7M, but if I were gonna do it over again now I'd probably do a supercharged 3.4, but not for the reasons people normally go over like bad headgaskets, its so much longer blah blah blah. The real shortcoming of the 7M is the oil pump I think. 7M's are only cool because you can have a turbo, and because the supra is such a famous sports car in Toyota history. If I have problems with my $2,000 rebuilt engine b/c of a $100 oil pump thats just not up to the task of low RPM cralwing in off-camber situations you can dang well bet it's getting a 3.4 quick like.

I'd go 3.4. It's newer technology, proven, reliable, and built for torque. It's a more straight forward swap and will appease your need for power. But if it doesn't appease it, you have several factory and other aftermarket mods that you can do that it responds well to.

I would go with a 7M swap as well. Better torque range than that of a V6. I never heard of any common failures of oil pump on any Toyota motor. The only downside of the 7M is you can only bolt up a (W) 4cyl trans. I believe you can use the turbo Supra bellhousing with a Taco R series trans but I'am not sure.

I am leaning toward the 7mge...seems to be a few good used ones aound for reasonable $$. Will the 340 auto from the 22re bolt up to the 7m? Someone told me it would...just a few inches longer.

I don't know about the 7M swap, but since you have a 22re right now, the 3.4 is NOT going to be a bolt up project!
Different motor mounts, different transmissions and bell housings, ect. This is not to say that it can't be done, but it will not be as easy as it is for those of us that started with the 3.0 drive train.

Have you considered a diesel swap? I'm about to start one in my 92 Yota next weekend. I'm getting a 3.0L 4 cyl Turbo Diesel and its Toyota. It pulls just about the same as the 3.4 and gets better mileage and diesels were made for crawling. An even easier swap for diesel would be whats called a 2LTE which is a 2.4L 4 cyl Turbo diesel that will bolt to your factory mounts and then you would need to deal with wiring. It has more torque than the 22RE and will get quite a bit better mileage. And they are not that bad for price either. My motor and tranny and everything came to 4200 shipped and the smaller 2LTE would be cheaper than that. And you get everything you need to swap it out. Then you will have torque. And if 230 lb ft at 1800rpm isnt enough then you could put an intercooler on and exhaust and boost it up to more than that. Just another idea. My 92 needed a motor as the V6 has 242k miles on the clock and is dead for the most part so I'm getting power, longevity, and I'll do well at the pumps.

Diesel has crossed my mind... I have owned several diesel trucks... In BC right hand drive diesel Toyota's are quite common. Both the Surf and the Landcruiser Prado. I have looked at a few wrecked 2LTE trucks as well. Just can't find an auto but they are around.
