22re surging at WOT
hey guys im fairly new here and need some help. i have searched and have found no satisfactory answers. i have a 92 4runner with the 22re and a manual trans. the truck is completely stock other then the air box mod (remove elbow and add more holes). the truck works fine during normal driving but over the last few days the check engine light has been coming on and i noticed today that at WOT the thing wont go past 4500rpm. it surges big time back to 4200rpm and then back to 4500 and so on. any ideas on why? any help would be appreatiated thanks

What year is it? 92? It still has the OBD1 Computer. Just short the terminals TE1 and E1 on the check connector and the engine light will flash the codes. You will need a Hays (or similar) manual to tell you what the codes mean. The codes may also be on the net somewhere. They will be like flash, blank, flash,flash.

Flash319 likely has it right, and it was my guess, too. Look for fuel delivery, either fuel filter or pump or both.

ok so i ran the codes today and got this
13- SAME AS ABOVE BUT AFTER ENGINE HAS RUN AT 1,000-1,500 RPM
--DISTRIBUTOR/DISTRIBUTOR CIRCUIT
--ECU
24 - INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR SIGNAL--OPEN OR SHORT IN INTAKE AIR TEMP. SIGNAL
--INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT
--INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR
--ECU
and 25 - AIR/FUEL RATIO LEAN INDICATOR--LEAN SIGNAL SENT TO ECU FROM O2 SENSOR
--INJECTOR FAULT(S)
--FUEL PRESSURE
--OXYGEN SENSOR
--AIRFLOW METER OR MAP SENSOR
--IGNITION
--ECU
so im thinking ( feel free to correct me if im wrong) i should get another distributer cap and rotor and that should cure 13 and adjust the maf to richen the mixture ( i seen that around this site somewhere) and that should cure 25... but any ideas on 24 ? i have no idea where the air intake temp sensor is. thanks so far you guys have been a great help!

i guess ill update. well since then ive changed the plugs, distributer cap rotor and plug wires and fuel filter, that solved the 13 and 25 but 24 stilll persists. the problem has gotten worse now its too the point that i cant really go over 3000rpm with any force ... if i creep it up itll go over but say on a steep hill i gotta downshift. i was told that it could be the o2 sensor and to check it you could unplug it but all that did was got me another code!!! so i hooked it back up. the only thing i can think of now would be the fuel pump. any thoughts?

Bad fuel pump and poor fuel pressure caused similar issues for me. Check the fuel pressure.
Mine would either have practically ZERO power accelerating from a dead stop , or it would jerk and buck like the transmission was going out. New fuel pump solved it.

well when the truck is cold i could rip the tires apart if i wanted to. and where do i plug in to check the fuel pressure. i forgot to mention that it only when it warms up. thanks still

WOW! You contributed a valuable piece of info in your last post. Maybe I missed it earlier. You say it runs great when its first started and as the engine warms. Thats when the ECM has the engine in open loop-- a preset situation that does not rely on all the various sensors to manage the fuel and other engine operations.
Check the coolant temp sensor. If it's faulty, it won't tell the ECM that the engine is warm. Therefore, the engine won't run at its optimum becuause it won't be in closed loop mode.

yeah i forgot to mention that earlier. sorry about that my brain is in closed loop mode or something. where could i find the coolent temp sensor? i just looked but really couldnt tell. i know your thinking i need a manual and im thinking the same but im waiting for canadian tire to get one in for me. i only got the truck in the first part of february so its new to me and my dad whos always had GMs. so you can see why trouble shooting is a problem. anyway enough ranting thanks ahead of time!

I have a 3.0 V6, so I'm not completely sure of the temp sensor location. Here's a link to a 93 FSM. It has both 22re and 3VZE info in it. It will probably cover most of your troubleshooting and repair issues.

well an update part 2 i replaced the coolent temp senser and now the o2 sensor and the problem has slightly bettered itself but still has a loss of power at high rpms and now backfires when it surges. i went to the dealer and they just scratched there heads. so thus far ive replaced the following: disributer cap and rotor, plugs , wires , coolent temp sensor, o2 sensor, and have checked the pcv valve. the next step is either fire insurance or the less moral ford v8 swap, unless somone can help me! thanks so far guys youve been great!

thanks man ill try that as soon as i get my brakes fixed ... on top of all this while i was out testdriving today to see if the o2 sensor was the problem i blew out a brake line! i swear if it wasnt for bad luck id have none at all
