So I started calling Toyota dealerships around here for the dual temp thermo (PN 90916-03070). Nobody has it in stock, the first place can order it for $41 (meh) and the second one told me $64! What the heck? I think I'll order that myself.

Well, I got time again to work on the truck. The plan was to fire it up today if everything went well. I filled it with oil and coolant, discovered a coolant leak under my lower intake. Oh well, I can figure that out.

I turned the engine over by hand several times to make sure everything sounded good. Sounds fine to me so I put it back at TDC, I make sure the bottom pulley is at 0 degrees and the marker on my top TC sprocket is up but now my bright link is off to the left side of the sprocket. What?! If I turn it back the other way it eventually lines up on top. I was very careful when I put the front cover on to make sure my bright links were lined up, i wonder if the bottom moved a link somewhere along the line like what happened to 22R2tuff.

Even with all this crap I figure I'll see if the starter will turn the engine over. I got a freshly charged battery all cleaned up and installed, I have ignition with the key in, lights work, trans is in neutral, clutch in and... nothing. I hear a little click behind my glove box every time I turn the key. So I start looking and I find a loose wire in the vicinity of the starter. I look at some of my pics and notice I don't have these two wires hooked up and I can't find them anywhere.

(The loose one I found isn't either of these.)

So after a break I'm going to take off the front pass. wheel and take a look around the starter. Hopefully this is relatively simple. We'll see.

I believe those 2 are just grounds, I think mine came from somewhere between the lower intake manifold and the upper chamber

Yeah, I think you're right. I assumed they were grounds but that may explain why my starter won't spin. Maybe if it's not grounded it won't work... I hope!

I dunno, I may wait until tomorrow, it's supposed to be lower 40s and sunny then which beats the crap out of today. I'm thinking today is a good day to go get some coffee with the better half!

So, as usual, I slept on this one and some obvious things cleared up in my mind. Since my bright link was moving on my sprocket I was worried I was a link off. Then I realized that if you have two different sized sprockets the chain HAS to move on them... DERRRP!!

This afternoon I'm gonna lift the front and take off the passenger wheel and get all that starter wiring crap figured out. I feel like I'm close now, but it's only 8am on a Sunday morning and I'm typing on a stupid internet forum! Gotta go do what's right

Okay, I hooked up my starter and tried to fix my coolant leak. It's better but still dripping. I think I may need to pick up a new gasket and O-ring for it.

So I moved on. I figured once I got it running I would adjust the valves and set the timing. I knew oil would be spraying with the engine running but I didn't think it would be spraying like a hose w/o the valve cover on! How the heck does one adjust the valves on this? I've only done SB Chevys before and those are a little messy but nothing like this geyser, that TC sprocket flung it everywhere. Anyway, I set the valve cover on and started it up again, it surged up to about 2500 rpms then died after about 2 or 3 seconds but hey, it ran!

Now I get to fix my coolant leak and maybe a little fuel leak. I saw a little fuel drip down around the fuel filter, we'll see what that's all about. Onward and forward...

It's running now, I got my coolant leak fixed and everything seems to be in some sort of running state. I set my timing and I seem to be at 10* at idle. If I read my manual correctly I should be at 5* but it wants to die when it's that low.

I'm going to go though it and make sure all my vacuum hoses are correctly installed. I hear a faint whistle when it's running that makes me think there is a loose line but I can't find it. There is also a little chatter from the valves. I set them cold (.007 intake and .011 exhaust), let it warm up and set them again.

I wish I had checked the timing before I tore this apart. In that 5 to 10 degree range this engine seems a lot quieter than I was used to. My idle seems to settle down to a nice 800 or so rpms which it used to take forever to get to before.

I'm still getting a little bit of white smoke and water from the tailpipe but I think it's clearing up. It was belching white this morning but it's not too noticeable now.

Here is a video of it running. For some reason my camera makes it sound WAY worse than it is, it's actually very quiet and that valve clatter isn't nearly as loud in person.

EDIT: watching that video again, I think the clicking is actually some sort of intake or exhaust leak. There was a little valve clatter but there was also a clicking coming from elsewhere. I'll check my intake manifold...

Congrats! Spray your hoses with throttle body cleaner. One by one. If idle changes you found your leak.

I found my whistle noise coming from the EGR valve that was left hand tight.
