22RE OR 4.3 GM Motor

You guys have different definitions of pulling a boat. I'm talking about 3k lbs at freeway speeds, with enough gear in the rig for a weekend away. .
It was a pretty straightforward swap, one of the easiest I've ever done (I've been involved in dozens of subaru swaps, including into multiple VWs, dune buggies, and even an RX7), certainly the best-documented. Would have been even easier if I had done the 4" bracket lift instead of a 2" body/drivetrain lift.
More power than the 5VZFE, cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, fits like a glove. Of course, the 5VZFE swap was not nearly as well-documented when I bought this truck as it is now, so it's a much more viable option, but I still don't think it holds a candle to the 4.3.

MY boat and trailer is about 3k id assume and i got enough room between the room in the boat and in the bed for plenty of gear ..just saying bro lol

Turbo..... Heck yeah!!!!!
Imagine a 2.7 with low comp pistons, CT20B at about 10-15 psi. I see an easy 250hp and torque to back it up. Plus you still retain the mpg when you crusing out off boost and when that 3k trailer or hill comes just spool her up and pretend you have a 350 in there
Me- well i feel a aristo 2JZ on stock JDM ceramic turbos, 3.5" exhaust, nice hefty fmic, and a bit of boost in my 4runner in a year he he and hey its still a 3.0L lmao

since this thread is limited to a 22re or a 4.3, I would keep the 22re. but in my opinion modifying a 22re for power is more of a headache than it's worth... skip a 4.3 and locate a 3rz vehicle and swap that instead

Agreed^^^ sorry just giving ideas beyond a 4.3.
Your right though. A 22re can only go sofar and honestly turbos dont enjoy them so you can only do a cam and exhaust which to me makes a 22re perfect. And yeah if you really need to do a swap just do a 3rz

If you've got a good 22RE now, toss a cam and header on and call it a day. If that's not enough, the 4.3 is a kick ass little engine, and what will end up under the hood of my truck if my 22R ever goes tits up. The 3rz is another good option if you can find a cheap donor, but a cheap donor for the 4.3 isn't an if, it's a matter of hitting CL and finding one.

I would go with the 4.3 imo, but I like to have the extra power and build all my own stuff. I had a 22r did a rebuild cam header intake and 5.29's and it did ok for power and good on fuel the 4.3 probably won't get as good on mpg. The 22re will be easier though. If you want lots of power and don't care about your fuel bill each month go 4.3 or 22re for a little less power but more fuel friendly. Or like me and build a 350 with way to much power and 7-9 mpg and break stuff.

Maybe. Typically 8ish is about the limit for a streetable setup on N/A compression. The engine I'm using has a 9.1:1 compression ratio, whereas the Typhoon/Syclone engine had an 8.35:1 (according to wikipedia...). You can run high boost and high compression, but it requires reliable high octane fuel, and a VERY good tune to manage it.
Our #171 Rally car is running about 20psi of boost on about 11:1 compression, but that's on 105 octane race gas, and we flew a former Prodrive engineer over from England to tune the car....
How does that setup do on the freeway? My parents have a MasterCraft ski boat, we always have my uncle tow it with his half ton (of course, my parents both drive Subarus....so that's not happening). Pretty sure a couple hundred freeway miles with that behind a 22RE 4Runner + 1k lbs of gear would make for a very miserable trip.
And yea, the OP is asking about keeping the 22RE, or swapping for a 4.3. If he has an opportunity to buy a running 4.3 donor vehicle for next to nothing, than any other engine swap is going to cost at least double, probably more.
