Umm no the intake is on the left side of the motor while the exhaust is on the right. At least on my sons 98 Tacoma thats how his 2.7 is set up.

Everything I've heard about the 2.7 is possitive. Good power and good economy. These swaps have been done with great success.

The only reason that they use a 2.7 now is that they need a cross platform 4 cylinder engine for all their vehicals. The 2.7 is a front wheel drive designed car engine. Intake and exhaust on the same side. I bet it is a good engine but I like the engineering of the 22re.
I like the engineering of the 22R series also.
So I'm curious - even seen a dyno run of the 3RZ to know how it compares to a dyno of the 22R-series? Usually a little displacement is good for bottom end torque.

I've read nothing that says the 3RZ is unreliable or unsuited for truck use.

I think the largest advantage that it has - same reason I turbo'd a 22RE - you can bolt it up to the stock driveline w/o spending a fortune to adapt it.... The next motor I do will very likely be the 3RZ.. A turbo version of course, but it certainly peaks my interest. Consider it part of the evolution of solid toyota motors!

Look on Pirate4x4 for 4rnrRick's posts.

LOADS of tech info.

22RE was 112hp / 130lb-ft
3RZ is around 150hp / 170lb-ft

A 22RE -3RZ swap is doable but not the cheapest route.
People doing this will tend to
-- use the marlin bell housing
-- upgrade to an R tranny
-- upgrade xfer to 23 spline

Once you are there the other major issues are
-- motor mounts
-- wiring harness

AFAIK
--AC integration is a case of custom hoses ?
-- PS integration is a case of hoses?

My understanding is that MPG will improve (but I cant confirm this)

2.7 does have a power advantage and is a significantly more efficient design... As stated above, I believe it will bolt up with a bellhousing change.

I've seen one aftermarket turbo report on it. The dyno was over 300hp.. Not sure if that was pump gas.

I like the 22R series also, but there are limits to 8 valve heads...
It gets way better than that. On LC Engineering's site, they offer a naturally aspirated engine with 300hp+, and turbo charged 1500hp+. This for a mere $22,000...

Actually, the 22RE was the second best motor they made. almost all toyota 4 cyl. motors are amazing. the first original bullet proof motor they made that was the best was the 22R. Simple, Easy, And could put out the power of the effort was made. did i forget to mention you don't have to deal with fuel rails and a fuel system?!?!? EAAAASSSYYYYY
