i got home tonight and didn't really feel like taking any pictures. traffic was so bad that i just felt like being mean to everyone, so i "forgot" to take pictures...
haha here's the pics. i swear, they're a bit brighter in person

not a silicon cap, but just a bunch of sharpie. after a while, it'll begin to fade

as for where to get them locally, i know autozone and advanced ap have red 168 (or 194) bulbs (they're usually tucked away on the bottom shelf), but they don't stock them. when they run out, they order more, so you may need to make multiple trips

I did my dash with red LEDs from superbrightleds.com the other day. came out pretty well.
the only weird thing is the lights for the turn signals and the high beams didn't work with the LED bulbs. I suspect they need a solid state flasher (had to get one of these when i replaced my turn signals with LED bulbs), so I left the incandescents in there for now.
These are pretty bright. I had to underexpose the picture a bunch to get good contrast without the light bleeding everywhere. it looks a little uneven during daylight but at night they are super deep red.

Getting ready to order the red LEDs for my truck, minus the turn signals, got to stay plain Jane with them, still like to find some incandesent red bulbs, but anyway I have one question before I order, anyone who has a automatic transmission and has done this, what size bulb is the bulb back lighting the (prnd2l and the 2h4h4l) thing ( I feel so stupid right now but the name of the thing is escaping me), and how do i get to that bulb to replace it with a red one? Any and all help is appricated!
Edit: how many bulbs are under that thing as well? Is there more than one size under there?

Well, looks like the light under the shifter in my auto, is a 198, took the thing apart in five minutes, tried for fifteen minutes to get the bulb out (anyone know how the little sucker works?) decided it looked like a 194, and proceded to take another hour to put the fern thing back together. (anyone who ever takes the shifter handles off from their auto remeber what way the little plastic (button looking thing) that the pole coming off from the button on the grip hits is turned, if you don't get it back just right, it won't allow you to shift out of park!)
So, little rant aside looks like I'll be ordering 4 of the WLED X5 bulbs in red from superbrightleds.com, now that I think about it better order a spare or two!
Before I order, can someone tell me how to get the dang lil bulb loose so that I can go and make sure of it's size!

Phill,
Pretty sure they are 194 bulbs - the same as behind the dash but not the climate control. The thing comes off pretty quick and easy...take a screwdriver to the store with you and check in the parking lot

Finally got around to doing this, never did order the LEDs, mainly because I found a single autozone near hear that stocks red bulbs, it looks great, though it made the gauges a little harder to read. irab, are you sure about that, on my truck I'm thinking the heater bezel took something like a 76, I have an extra laying in the packet in the garage, if I think about it I'll look tommorow, maybe it's because of the model year difference?
Also the bulb under the shifter in an auto (at least on my truck) is the same as the one behind the heater bezel, still haven't been able to find it in red, about ready to break out moms red nail polish and lightly coat it twice then put a single clear on it (will that work?)
Skoti, the heater bezel pops off with a screwdriver, but they break extreamly easily, so be carefully withit. Behind the bezel dohivky will be a clear plastic "light disperser" as I call it, there's a little tab on the right edge that you have to pry lose (without breaking) this is on an 87 xtra cab pickup though. As for the overhead light, I'm putting the dome light and rearview out of a 99 ford escort into my truck, on page three of this thread, there's another option for using the same mounting point, and then there's always those led bricks from autozone.
Hope I helped
