spartin locker

im looking to regear my runner with some 5.29s and lock it, ive narrowed my choices down to an aussie or a spartin, aussie dont replace my carriering case and my pinion grinded into mine but it just the outside of it. and i believe a spartin replaces the carriering case completly, because of how new spartins are i havent heard to much good or bad about them, i called randys today and was quoted on 680$ plus tax for 5.29s and a spartin installed and he told me aussies were junk and they clunk. would i be better off buying the ring and pinion off trail gear and a locker either aussie or spartin, and putting it together myself then having someone dial it in for me.
any suggestions or opinons on either of these lockers?

they boyh replace the same parts but the spartan comes with a cross pin, and it is vacuum packaged and is an easy install.
all of the loackright/aussie/spartan have a ratchet shound around corners, have random loud pings, clunks, and pops. they all have lurching effects around tight turns on pavement etc....

i would say contact ZUK. he is a great guy and does one heck of a good job. he takes pride in what he does.

place to start
http://www.marlincrawler.com/differe...spartan-locker

i ordered my gears/lockright from 4wheelparts for my 80.

i ordered my gears and lockright from trail gear for my 94.

i have done 6 lockright installs, 1 aussie and 1 spartan and so far my favorite was the spartan. on 2 of the lockrights 1 i ordered i received crushed springs and the other there was the wrong coupler inside in the box (zuk actually helped me out with this he had a good condition used one, saved my ass).

the aussie i had i was not a fan of. WAY more noise than the lockright and lots more metal shavings in the pan.

also i would get a master install kit if you plan on putting new gears in just to have peace of mind ya know.....

I've had Spartan's in the front and rear of my 85 for quite some time. They work great. They do make pops once in awhile but nothing obnoxious. Really it just requires some minor tweaking to your driving style on the street, on the dirt you're gonna wonder why you waited so long to install them.

Spartans are easy to install AND remove.

These will not drop in with after market, taller gears due to the thicker ring gear.....FYI....

My dad has a aussie in the front of his jeep and I have a spartan in the rear of my 4runner and both are great I have never heard a noise out of his and I have only heard a pop out of mine twice and both times were on pavement going from a stop while turning as sharp as I could. I bought the spartan because it came with a new cross pin I dont know why my dad got a aussie but we are both happy. also bigbluepile what do you mean these will not drop in with thicker gears? ours did just fine and work great. I am not knocking you just wondering what problems you had just so I know if I am helping some one do another lunchbox locker. Like

I'm thinkin Big B meant that the thicker ring gear does not allow for easy access to the inside of the carrier. While it's possible to install the spartan, or any lunchbox locker for that matter, with deeper gears it's not as easy as a "drop in " with standard gear ratio.

I could be wrong about Big Blue's statement but I'm tossing this out anyways.

The 4.88's and 5.29's diffs that I put Aussie/lockrite/spartans in the ring gear has to come off. The cross pin will not come out otherwise. HOWEVER, the OEM 4.88 diffs are a very thin ring and IIRC do not require the ring to be pulled.

after I wrote it I kinda thought thats what you were getting at and that is correct I was doing my gears and the spartan at the same time so I already had it apart. and with my dads jeep we had it apart because his ez locker blew and we were checking everything out to make sure it was good to go. still I am a beg fan of the aussie and spartan they are awsome

BBP are you saying with these lunchboxes you still have to re-setup the 3rds after install? Because I have always been under the impression you didn't have to when using these types.

Lockrite and aussie I believe cover both the 4 and 6 cyls. as well. (different application) Pretty much the "same" style.

I could type out...AGAIN...the answer....but I'm not going too.

Factory 4.10's or shorter should be able to just drop in without pulling the ring off.
