Rebuild in San Jose for 1988 W55 transmission

1988 model year pickup, 2 wheel drive, 5 speed. 22R with carb. Bought it in 1989. Now has 150k miles. Original engine and transmission. My Home Depot hauler.

This is the build plate. W55 transmission.

Over the past few months I have noticed a noise when I step on the gas pedal while in 5th gear. A whirling noise. Lift off the pedal and there is no noise. None of the other gears make a noise. Transmission shifts fine in all gears.

From reading the messages the 5th gear bearings are weak. It is my time.

I am looking for a place in the San Jose that can rebuild my transmission. My transmission. I am not looking for an already rebuilt transmission. My transmission.

For you San Jose people the place on Berryessa Avenue has rebuilt transmissions and engines. They say they were done by a local machine shop, but will not give me the name of the shop.

Does anyone know the name of the shop?

Also, what year trucks were the W55 used on?

Is that place on Berryessa called Toyota Truck and 4x4 Dismantlers, and is it run by an arabic guy or indian or something? It looks like the same shop I bought a supposedly rebuilt 22re from and the valves were shot and it had a rod knock. They had a one year warranty but wouldn't honor it and just yelled at me. We got in a heated arguement and then they called the police. The engine died six months later. I know this sounds rediculous, but I'm serious. Is their address 991 berryessa or something similar?

I'll wager Marlin could rebuild that tranny. I think the only difference between that and the W56 (4WD) tranny, is the tailhousing, probably identical inside.

Otherwise for a shop in the Sacto. area, try:

T & M Transmission Exchange
3663 Omec Cir # 6
Rancho Cordova, CA 95742
(916) 852-0583

They rebuilt my current W56 about 8 years ago. I think they do all manner of Toyota manual transmissions.

There is a used cheap transmission on the local craigs list about 40 minutes from where I live. Might be junk. Might be something else. The listing says it it for a 5 speed, mid to late 1980's. Seller says it was a spare and needs to clean out the garage.

I know little to nothing about truck transmissions. Last time I looked at mine was in 1989 when I pulled it out to replace the clutch.

From my google search W55 was also used on cars, but it has different parts.

My questions.

Was the W55 in the truck application only used for the pickup, not also 4Runner. Is it only for a 2 wheel drive. Carb vs. fuel injection. What years was it used on what.

Also, if I ask the seller to verify what he has, what does he look at on the transmission. Is W55 on it.

This is the only picture of it.

Here is another on craigs list. The only info is that it is from a 1985. From the picture it looks like the first one. But they could both be from a Yugo for all I know.

So, what do I look at to tell if it is a W55?

Here is one that is not on craigs list.

It is listed as a 1985-1988 pickup, 5 speed, 2 wheel drive.

I have a 1988 pickup, 5 speed, 2 wheel drive.

Once again. What do I ask the seller to look at and verify that what they have is for my application?

Ask what the VIN plate lists if it is the original tranny. Otehrwise, ask what engine it has, that is a 2WD tranny and if it is for the same engine you have, it should bolt up. Not sure where the identifying marks are for the W55. Look on yours and see if there is something unique about it, similar to what MArlin has on his tranny-ID page.

None of the transmissions have the donor vehicle for the seller to look at.

When I ask them if it is a W55, they ask what they should look at. That is why I asked my question.

They picked up a spare transmission from somewhere for something, as a spare. Or, they bought a wrecked truck because they needed the engine and now they are selling the transmission.

They do not have the vehicle plate to look at.

I stuck my head under my pickup, and all 3 of those pictures look like ... a transmission. Could be mine - could be a Celica.

Marlin's id page does not have my transmission.

I would also not recommend that shop at all, and honestly, I am not surprised they're selling crappy engines. They look nice, but that's where it ends.

I went there more than once and everytime, they promised to call me back (arabic guy) and never did. Very unreliable. And he always seems to talk down on you.

With the growing of Internet Commerce, there's really no reason not to go to places like Marlin etc. Even the couple hundred extra is worth knowing you have a quality product.

Just my 2c

Not saying that Marlin's page has you tranny listed, but find some distinguishing feature of yours to see if the others have the same thing. Bolt pattern on bell housing, number of bolts on the tail housing, some sort of stamped markings, different material used in different parts of the housing, length, location of the shifter, etc.

Great. Here is my pickup. My transmission. I drive it almost every day.

If there is no way to tell a W55 transmission other than a build plate, then someone just say so. So I do not not waste effort.

I am not going to pull out my transmission, then drive to a place to see if it looks like my transmission.

Why don't you call Marlin and ask him if he can rebuild it if you send it to him? I'm sure he can. Just pull it out, mail it to marlin, he'll rebuild it and ship it back then all ya gotta do is put it back in. Unless you are trying to find a used cheap one somewhere but, that's what you'll get: a used cheap one.

Apparently Marlin has issues with answering the phone.

http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=31482.0

Their message board has a customer service section. I am not happy with what I see. http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?board=1.0

I sent an email to C.J. at Marlin last week. Got not response. Then sent and email to Marlin himself. Got no response. I even registered on the Marlin message board.

I will repeat my question.

I am looking for a shop in San Jose, where I live. I want to deal with a local shop or person in the town where I live.

Never said Marlin was fast, he's had my tranny and t-cases for almost a month now, but I am in no rush and know they will be done right when I pick them up.

Try searching with Google for some local shops.
