i have a 1984 yota pickup, 22r, 5 speed. 4x4
bought it cheap, and now i think ive finally hit my first serious issue.

when i let out my clutch pedal, and accelerate, i get a pretty loud squeaking sound, if i let off the accelerator and coast in gear, or slow down the squeak goes away.

so if its my throwout bearing, wouldnt it squeak the whole time the clutch was engaged? (or disengaged?)

im lost...

one more thing, ive never replaced a clutch before, but im very mechanically minded and i have worked on other car parts, how hard is it to replace a clutch in this truck? im trying to save hundreds of dollars by not taking it to a shop.

any help will be appreciated.

Squeeking under acceleration, have you checked your belts?

replacing clutch is really not that bad if your up for it, the first time its kind of like uhh wtf? but you learn alot, hardest part is getting those top two bolts out of the bell housing.

yea its not my belts, its coming from the rear... how do i check the differential fluid? it doesnt seem to have a rubber plug like most trucks.... there is a 1" bolt on the bottom that i cant get off cuz i lost my 1" wrench, but there is another bolt on the very top left of the diff, do i put fluid in there? i do leak fluid so i know it needs filled.

dont think low fluid in your diff would cause squeeking under acceleration, usually when there is a problem in there its just a loud crunch/pop followed by grinding noises.

well the rear does have a light grinding noise. i just wanna fill it up

pull the 3rd and inspect the r/p and carrier for damage if its grinding

also down load the FSM, it will tell you step by step how to do everything.

you can pull the whole diff out of the rear if you pull your axles out, unbolt the diff from the housing. then you can inspect your ring and pinon gears to see if there is damage to them

Check your U-Joints. I've seen them dry up and cause exactly what you are describing. As for the tranny removal. Its not hard at all. Last time I had mine out it took less than 30 minutes for me and a buddy to put it back in. I've had mine out several times.

Dry ujoints will cause a squeak under accel or decel.

i just put the truck in gear, and laid underneith as my buddy rocked it, and the noise is coming from my rear u-joint. so thanks cadet espicially. i still might inspect my ring and pinion gears. this truck sat awhile, i need to check everything.

although seeing as a whole clutch kit is less than 100 bucks, i might as well throw a new clutch in it. :/

dont put a clutch in just cause if yours is working fine imo, thats a dangerous/expensive slope to go down, i know ;(.

i say just pump some grease in the u joint and drive her tell she explodes!

i couldnt figure out why my clutch mast cyl was losing fluid but not pressure, then i lifted up the carpet to the left of the clutch pedal and its all wet haha. looks like my mast cyl was leaking into the truck the whole time, right out of one of two of the only rust hols on the entire truck... this truck has a mind of its own i swear...

my master cylinder leaks the same way, actually might replace it tomorrow, depends how much i drink tonight though.

i love how cheap most parts are for my 84 yota. fuel pump 40 bucks, brake pads 10 bucks, wheel cylinders for the rear brakes 25 bucks, u joints 12 bucks, clutch kits 80 bucks. master cylinder for brakes 30 bucks, master cylinder for clutch 30 bucks. love it.

Cheap? Maybe...

Although I just dropped a lot of coin on an engine swap, brakes, knuckles, blah, blah, blah....

So I been trying to figure where the cheap is... My wife has been trying to find the cheap in "my cheap little Toyota truck... Please Hun!?!"

i was thinking about doing this "chevy brake conversion" ive seen floating around here.
