i was looking at headers to get and i mentioned it to my dad. and he said no itll just leak.. same with my dads friend he said its pointless it will just leak... is that common prob for 22r's? are they just used to v8's with headers? i mean i definitely would like some more power.

If you buy a good quality header and gasket you won`t have any problems at all. I have a Downey header on my 86 4Runner and ive never had any problems with it at all. All you really need to do after the header has been installed is to check and retighten the header bolts after a few heat cycles and thats it.

I ran a LCE header, and also never had any problems. Use new nuts, and of coarse exhaust gasket, and torque to spec.. I also used anti-seize on the threads.

I have an LCE header as well and it does not leak.

You don`t need to use new nuts, i reused all the original nuts and havn`t had any problems.

I've had a doug thorley header for the last 3 yrs and am still using the gasket it came with and no leaks yet.

I am looking to buy a header finally for my '84 and just wondering what brand you guys recommend. I looked around for other post but I couldnt find one so any help would be appreciated. thanks guys

Doug thorley. I have them on my 3.0. Smog legal, and a great product. well worth the investment. there is also pacesetter ( known for melting the finish on it, you'll need to put a high temp coat of paint on it ) also there is LC Engineering, dont know their product, haven't heard anything bad about it. they are pretty pricey though.

I just got the LCE header for my 87 22RE and it's great. Good build quality, and they include all the OEM gaskets and goodies you'll need.

50 state smog legal for their "street" headers.

I'm anxiously awaiting their "Pro Flow" cat back exhaust system to hook up to it (sounds LOUD all by its lonesome.

LCE costs more, yes, but if you search here and several other forums as I did, they have a great reputation. Several folks have the same header from them they installed 15 years ago - very satisfied customer base.

I'd do it again.

I'm still running stock, but all the info I have searched and the people i have talked with all say either Doug Thorley or LCE. Both are kinda high, but you'll get what you pay for is the bottom line.

Funny, I actually had ordered both the header and pro flow at the same time, and had them both around until I had a chance to do the header (with my timing chain replacement over xmas). Stripped some stuff in my head and had to trailer it to a shop....just got it back last week and on Saturday started the Pro Flow Install.

Things were tricky - 2 hours into it I finally realized that they had sent me the WRONG kit - it was for a pickup. The only part in the kit that was the same was the Magnaflow muffler! Good news is, I called Monday and told them and they have the RIGHT one in the mail, and a return shipping label for the other kit....great customer service. Can't wait to get it hooked up this weekend!

If you haven't got the LCE catalog, it's addicting. I've had it for over a month and I can't put it down - so many goodies in there!

Hope your install goes well and you don't have to cut anything - are you going to weld the flanges or just use the clamps?

I had a chrome Downey on my 84, and it was great. Fit perfectly, no leaks, and it was shiney!

Most older folks are basing their opinions on the headers from days of old, where they were not made to todays standards. Anyone remember Blackjack headers from Super shops?? $55 set of small block chevy headers.

Headers made today for Toyotas are usually top notch, I just sold a brand new Pacesetter for a 22re, and the thing was nice. Super thick flange, great welds-- collector flange appeared a little thin, but with a good gasket it would never cause any problems.

Find a reputable header, bolt it on and enjoy

LCE makes a good one. Had one on my 87 4runner. Hope to be putting one on my 89 next month.

When I had Pace Setter header 6 yrs ago it was a piece of crap. I don't know if that counts as days of old.

I had to drill out every hole on the mounting flange because they were all off, not just one but all of them. I made the mistake of using the gasket it came with and the thing blew out within a couple miles. Then the paint burned off and the thing stunk and smoke for a half hour. The mount for the O2 sensor was so far out of the exhaust flow it wouldn't get a reading and my check engine light would come on.

I don't know if they have improved in the last few years and I doubt I ever will because I will never use one of their products again.
