That could very well be because you gotta pump the hell outta the gas to start it. Its got a fuel pump on it I've never seen on a Toyota so is this stock?

yeah, stock mechanical fuel pump on a 22r
its like about $89.37 from toyota online for the fuel pump
part number 23100-39336
but I would call toyota and give them your vin # to be sure that's the right one, and prob get the gaskets to

this is common in mechanical fuel pumps. my 87 dodge did the same thing when i first got it. it was hard to start after it sat a while. the diaphragm that separates the gas from the oil gets small holes in it.
make sure you clean the surfaces well with carb cleaner and to change your oil
and if it isnt that....when was the last time you changed the fuel pump anyway?

when i said after it sat a while i meant like 12 hours. if it sat over night it wouldnt start in the morning. had to use starter fluid. but if i started it every couple of hours it would fire right up no problem.
just sharing those symptoms with you so you could compare

where the new fuel pump mounts to the engine block. just make sure you scrap the old gasket off that surface and give it a wipe down with acetone or carb cleaner. that helps to achieve a good seal
if you have the same symptoms i had, its the fuel pump. you'll be amazed at how well itll start after replacing it. might as well do fuel filter too, if its cheap and easily accessible.

If it doesn't end up being the fuel pump, I wonder what would be the next step in trouble shooting the "gas in your oil" problem... Does anyone have any suggestions after the fuel pump?

bad piston rings would be my guess. only time gas has a chance of getting into the block is through the mechanical fuel pump, and during the compression stroke. with bad rings it could push the fuel mixture past the rings into the block. but its a air/gas fume at that point, not a liquid. so really i'm not sure to be honest.
wait, if the carb has a stuck needle and seat it could flood liquid gas into your intake which then could get into the block. thats a possibility. but this is my experience with motorcycles and gravity fed fuel systems, doubt it would work the same with an old toyota.
also check your PCV valve to make sure its working properly

Well that could be to becuase when I got it it was hella rich and also wasnt fireing on #4. My dad and I have got it closer to where its supposed to be and fixed the miss since then. Same oil tho. But there's definitely a pre carb issue too

whatever you do change the oil often if gas is in there or keeps getting in there or you will have issues with your rings soon if you keep running it and then its rebuild or swap time.
