In-frame crankshaft and main bearing replacement

I have a rebuilt top to bottom 22re in my '85. with +/- 50k on the clock. A rod bearing went and took the crank with it. With my lifted SFA rig I can get to everything down there real easy by jacking up the frame a bit. I would rather not pull the engine b/c the only space I have to work is the driveway the thing is parked in and I know everything else is relatively fresh with the engine. My question is if anyone has replace a crankshaft in-frame before and would it be possible to slide the crank in/out from one end, like to drop the tranny, flywheel, tcv, and rear main, but leave the timing cover on. It's been a while since I helped my friend rebuild one of these so how everything fits together and if this is possible is beyond me right now, so your feedback is appreciated.

It would be alot easier to remove the engine. You will need to remove the timing cover to get the timing gear off, then remove the transmission to get the clutch and fly wheel off. So you would save your self a whole lot of time and extra work by pulling the engine to do the work.

Red face

If you really have to do this it will be a royal pain putting the rods back on without doing any more carnage .

Your also going to need help to get the crank back in then you will be in each others way.

i would guess you have no one you can go to that has a place.

Then the oil from prelubing the bearings is gonna drip down on your face.

Good luck May the Force be with you!!! your going to need it
