my 85 4runner makes a whinning noise when it is in gear and i let off the gas. if i push the clutch in the noise goes away. sometimes while accelerating it makes the same noise but i suspect it is a problem that is working its way up to utter catastrophy. people have told me it is the throw out bearing, but as i read more into it, i am suspecting my rear pinion. i have taken the driveshaft off and the pinion bolt is tight and the u joints are in fair condition (need a little grease but otherwise good). i plan on taking the driveline off so i can take a look inside the diff without having to take the whole rear apart. maybe that will shed more light into the situation, but in the mean time if anyone has any suggestions i would appreciate it. thanks, mike

It can also be caused by badout put shaft bearings, or 5th gear bearings which are both a high failure rate item.

My trans did the exact same thing, and the 5th gear bearing was worn out.

is there anything to be looking out for when i check my u-joints??
the tranny was replaced in 04' brand new installed by toyota dealership. i know what your talkin about though, my bearings went out and gear by gear the the tranny blew up...600 miles away from home...FML anywho since i moved to okc it has become my daily driver due to lack of mountains and i rarely use 5th gear

took it for a test drive and it barly made the original noise. now i get a burning type smell when i accelerate hard not sure if it is related. might check transmission fluid level...sometimes i hate old vehcles, one thing after another on the upside i have wanted new gears for a while and this gives me the ammo to convince the wife to let me do it
