CaptDash..whenever you get this sorted out & satisfied that everything is working proper..will you please post up exactly what parts you used. There is a '94 V6 4x4 4-Runner being parted out near me & I may try to rob parts for a brake upgrade on my '85 4x4.So far..it sounds like the only parts you were able to use from a newer truck was the dual diaphragm booster/master cyl.,correct ? Hey Sleeper the "ONLY" way that brake booster will work is if it is small enough to clear your steering column, which I DOUBT. I used the dual diaphram BB off of a 90 2 wheel Taco, and it is perfect and works awesome. I never assumed that Toyota went to some fkced up studs and rotors, but the 94 rotors would NOT work. The 94 4Runner V6 Calipers WILL work. I got the 87 LC Rotors. Now you can probably cut back to a 92 4x4 truck and use those calipers. There will not be quite the gap for the rotor to turn through the calipers, but I am not sure that makes that much difference. The Master cylinder I am using is coming off of a 94 4Runner fro Autozone for like 62 Bucks. It is the 1" one. I will pick it up tomorrow and give you the part number. It is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying it from these vendors who want 140ish bucks for the same thing.

I will post you the part numbers tomorrow. The cheapest place to buy wheel spacers is off of EBAY. Some guy there is selling pretty much anything for 60 bucks shipping INCLUDED. I paid a 100 bucks and already had them ordered or I would have gotten them. I got 1.25" spacers. I will post part numbers tomorrow.

In the beginning Toyota created the 1985 Straight Axle front end with solid rotor and small caliper brakes.



Then like so many before him, CAPTDASH came along and decided to improve upon the 85 front brake system.

Note the back corners of the brake backing plate had to be trimmed slightly to allow the larger caliper to fit. The plate was trimmed at the top and bottom.

As soon as I get the Master Cylinder installed I will post the pics. I bought the rotors and calipers from Orielly's. Rotors were 46.00 a piece. Calipers were 64.00 a piece. Master Cylinder (94 V6 4Runner) is coming from Autozone--(Part #NM52713--62.99 before my discount.) I bought the wheel spacers from East Coast Gear Supply for 100 bucks shipped to my door. I later found them for 60 bucks shipped from a couple of EBAY stores.

Thanks for updating the thread & part#'s CaptDash. Question...was it/is it necessary to run wheelspacers when upgrading to this setup,or are you using wheelspacers simply due to the wheels you're running ?? Thanks, Sleepr71.

You will definitely have to run wheel spacers. I will take you a pic tomorrow to show you why. You can probably get by with 1" spacers but I went with 1.25" to be sure. I also found a company in CA that has the spacer lug nuts with the collar/sleeve that tightens all the way down on the stud instead of the included acorn style nuts. I am going to order me some of those. I think they were about 12 bucks. When I find the source again I will let you know.

I got my master cylinder today. Autozone gave me 10% off 62.99. This was a BRAND NEW MC not a rebuild. I don't know why people insist on buying these 140 MC's and calipers from some vendors when a little searching will save some major bucks on this type of upgrade.

Sleeper I am going to get you another part number for the caliper that may work better than what I have. I am a little concerned about how much space the calipers have to close up on each side of the rotor, but it may not be a big deal. I wish I could have used those 94 Rotors. They were THICK but had wrong stud holes. You can see the space/gap I am talking about in one of the pics above.

Sleepr here is why you have to run the wheel spacers.



Do you see the original outer part of the hub that is right behind the wheel spacer? Do you see how far outside of that hub the new caliper extends? With the spacer you now can put your wheel on without hitting the caliper. Do you follow me?

Ahh...Gotcha now! Yep..no way around wheel spacers on this set-up. Thanks for updating the thread CAPTDASH & this would make a good thread to sticky..IMO. Too bad I have fresh front pads/rotors for my '85..guess I'll have to wait until they wear out or I get tired of the weak,factory set-up. Wonder if just upgrading the booster/m.c. to the dual diaphragm(later model) on our SA trucks would make a noticeable difference? Thanks again! Sleepr71.

I am still not satisfied with my brakes. I don't have much pedal. I do have a very minute leak at that proportioning valve. I don't know if that is causing it or not. I may have air in the system.

YES on the dual diapram booster. That was the first thing I did. It was amazing how much it helped. That alone wil drastically improve your brakes. I am going to get the adjustable proportioning valve and put on my MC and see if that helps. I can pump the brakes about 2 short pumps then hit them and that joker will lock up the fronts. I noticed with spacers, my tires are now rubbing when turning. I guess it is time to put that 4 inch suspension lift on it that I have been holding on to. Let me know if I can help you with anything. I will try anything til I figure it out or crash. LOL

I think you can swap your hubs for IFS hubs and may not have to run spacers..

but not sure about the whole deal..just starting rumors

On those large calipers, pretty much gotta have wheel spacers on the front.

Upgrading the brake system makes a huge difference. My 85 would lock up my 39.5s if it had to do so, front and rear discs. Can't have leaks though.

My second best brake upgrade next to what you just did was removing my LSPV and installed my own brake bias valve. Took the rest of the slight spongy feel out.

I just upgraded my Booster and MC to a V6 model and wow. I haven't even touched the pad or rotors yet, but the brakes feel brand new.

Haven't been around for awhile but I am ready to work on the brakes some more. I need to remove the LPV and replace it with a manual valve at the MC. I know to get the valve from Summit. Waskilly has pointed that out previously.

How do you get the metric brake lines to work with the standard threads on the manual valve?
