85 22RE, does my o2 sensor need replaced?
I have an 85 22re pickup with a rebuilt motor with about 1,000 miles on it. The check engine light came on a few times while setting the timing and fine tuning it. I figured it must have been the timing since it was off at first and the light stayed off for a couple weeks once the timing was set right. Before I reset the computer it read as an o2 sensor and stayed off for a couple weeks. Well it turned on again for about 3 seconds a couple days ago and is an o2 reading. I am only getting 14.5 mpg right now and the exhaust smells a little rich. Is there a way to check if that o2 sensor is bad? I have never replaced it and I am 95% sure that is what it is but just wanted to see if there was a way to check it. Is that mpg typical for a new motor? 30x9.5 tires, stock drivetrain, auto trans, rv2 cam, 4° advanced, 2" freeflow exhaust. I am guessing I would get better mpg with a new one, correct? What about any more power? Could always use both...
Thanks in advance!

I have a '85 and my CEL would go on and off a bunch of times through out the drive. I changed the O2 and no more CEL. I didn't see any preformance gains and the MPG was a bit better. BTW I have a stock motor, stock drivetrain pushin 33x12.50s.

that ~14 mpg is classic that the o2 sensor isn't doing it's job. I would replace it. For what it's worth, I replaced my o2 sensor and I went from ~15 mpg to 22 mpg. My brother replaced his o2 sensor and went from 12 to 21 mpg. Both engines are 22RE with the single heated o2 sensor.

I got my new Denso o2 sensor now but that old o2 sensor is not coming out. The bolts came out easy and the seal is released and the sensor is loose but won't come out. Does the end of the sensor expand in those? I can pull it out about a 1/4-1/2" but acts like it is catching on something. I can even rotate a little bit too. Anyone have this problem before? The new sensor looks like it has plenty of room to drop in. I have pulled and tugged... Should I just pull harder because the part is worthless and not worry if it breaks?

Got it. It was stuck in there pretty good. It dented the side of the screen pretty good but at least its out. I had to grind the inside of the manifold to get the new one back in because I didn't want to damage it. I hope my mileage increases now...
