1st gen runner (1984) Shifting Questions.

Hey guys, new to my '84 Runner 22R with a 5spd. Of course no Tach, so I am wondering what kind of speeds you guys are shifting at, I'm assuming stock gearing (I dont think anything was ever done to this 4Runner. So I am curious at what speeds you guys shift through the gears on the highway or road driving, so as not to be over revving....Right now, I am sort of shifting ever 15mph or so.

1st - 0-15ish
2nd - 15-30ish
3rd - 30-45ish
4th - 45-60ish
(I usually dont get past here, but I know 5th gear will get on up to about 75)
5th - 60+

That looks about right.
I've been 95mph, but I thought she was going to blow up.
5th gear 75-85mph is the sweet spot,with the 4.10s.

Well, I dont have a Tach in my cluster....wanna help me out on what speeds you are hitting at 2500-3000 rpms in each gear? Thats what I was looking for, someone who has a tach to tell me what speeds are in the "safe zone" for each gear.

Those speeds seem about right. I'll use 3rd up to 65 on uphills on the highway.

You can work out the RPMs for each gear:

3rd up to 60-65, usually runs me 4000-4500 on the tach.

These babies don't hit the power band until after 3300-3500. Rev it up!

If you keep it in those RPM's, you will have a DOG. Gotta rev it to get the power outta these trucks.
