Hey guys, I have a 1985 4Runner with the A340H. It runs and shifts well, but it won’t shift down unless I’m going like 30-35 mph up hills and it’s kind of annoying. It’s a bone stock truck and I really appreciate older original items as i am a collector of many other things besides old Toyotas.

If anyone else out there drives an auto first gen please let me know if this is normal for them. I know they’re Uber slow, but as for not shifting down unless going around 35 mph, is that normal for them?

That being said, do you guys think it would hurt the value of the truck to swap a manual transmission into it rather than keep it how it left the factory? I prefer manual, but it’s hard for me to alter original hard to finds items. I figured I’d reach out to fellow Toyota enthusiast before I do anything, because if it’s worth more with the manual, I’ll probably do it because I’m going to buy another 1st gen with a manual if I dont swap this one.

You didn't really give a lot of details however..

During coast down with the throttle completely closed the down shift from OD to 3rd happens between 21 and 17 mph according to the manual..




Maybe try the manual.shift tests from the FSM for a starting point.

I will do that! Sorry for lack of details. It’s when I’m driving up a hill. I can feel it shift out of OD into third with the throttle open, but it won’t shift down after that from third with the throttle open until 30-35.

if I’m reading that correct, you’re supposed to be able to shift through 1st 2nd and 3rd gears in D2? I can only get to second and after that it won’t shift into third . After I adjusting my tps properly it did for a little bit but won’t now.

To your other question, I don't think you will hurt the value of the truck swapping to a manual.

Sounds like your kick-down-cable is out of adjustment

ive messed with that a bit. I have it adjusted correctly and I’ve even tightened it up a bit to see if it helps and I does change some things, but not the speed at which it shifts

That's a line pressure cable, does not control kickdown.

Check the TPS calibration. The ECU uses the TPS signal to determine when to shift.

the tps is gooood to go. I’ve adjusted it as good as it will get

My next question, what size tires are you running? I had a 86 auto, (for 15 years) it ran better in power mode with 31 inch tires.

My A340H shifts whenever it feels like it too. I just use the od on off button to manipulate overdrive
