you should be fine. You replacing the t-stat soon right? No oil and coolant mixing? Make sure and test the t-stat in a pot of water before you replace it. Might want to have the radiator checked and cleaned as well. Flush the system and refill with fresh coolant. If you need some tips on flushing and burping the cooling system let me know and i'll walk you through the easy way of doing it.

I bought a brand new radiator and thermostat and put them in... it kept doing the overheating\bubbleing out thing. I removed the thermostat and it runs great....No overheating , no pressure , no bubbleing. etc. I may need to flush it soon though , from 2 days or so worth of driving that antifreeze went from green to brownish green with small debri's in it.

With that being said it sounds like you have a clogged system and need to flush it. Take the t-stat that you pulled out (if you still have it) Boil it in a pot of water and see if it opens. If it does then you have a functioning t-stat. Always check a t-stat before you install as it is easy and will save you head aches in the future. You also need to burp/bleed the cooling system. With air pockets in there it can and will expand faster than the coolant and push coolant through the rad cap and into the over flow. Sounds like the root of your problems might be a clogged coolant system paired with a bubble in the system as well.

Thermostat works well, i boiled it when i got it before i ever installed it. And ive burped the system multiple times. I DO believe i have a cloged system, and with the thermostat since its a constant pressure its fine because it keeps the crap outa the way or flowing. But with the thermostat in it doesnt have enough force to keep the crap outa the way so it can cool. I may have to do a cooling system clean out "no clue how" in the near future to get it to run right. But for now...im content...I drove it over 2hrs straight last night and it was fine. Then i sat in traffic about an hour and it started to get hot. So i just pulled to the side...let it cool a little bit and got outa traffic. It was fine after that.

Did a oil change , cap and rotor today....everything short of trans and diff fluid is practicly new.

So no head failure then? Always nice to know you don't have to tear apart the top half of an engine

Before you open the thermostat, I would unbolt the thermosat housing cover adn flush through there. Remove all heater/radiator hoses and remove the engine coolant drain plug. Then probe every orifice of your engine's coolant system and crank your garden hose up high for about 5 minutes per orifice. I do this flush method once a year before summer, so I'll be doing it here shortly.

Prior to flushing, I remove the thermostat and fill the system with water and a small scoop of laundry soap. Run around for about a half hour of straight driving and then drain the entire system and perform the flush. Preventive maintenace.

New problem....My driver side front tire is pushed back , looks like thet truck has been previously wrecked. The odds of it bending that axel are slim to none...so what are the weak points in the front end of a straight axel? I diddnt notice it because it go's straight on the road but when turning i heard it scrubbing and it only does it on the driver side. I can turn the other side all the way with plenty of room left over. So whats the weak spots that could have bent?

Check the bolt that goes threw the spring pack and aligns the axle at the spring perch to see if it broken .

Well ive driven it a few more days and it seems that it still randomly overheats and ive narrowed it down to 1 of 2 things. Either the system is clogged up "highly likely" Or the headgasket is blown "also highly likely with 400k+ miles" my only doubt on the headgasket is the fact that i have no loss of power =\....hmm im kinda at a stand still...idk what to do anymore. I guess try flushing the system from the thermostat houseing and where the bottom radiator hose connects. After that its off to get a HG put on it.....i wonder what a shop charges =\.

man....i sat here for 15 mins reading your thread and hoping you fix the coolant leak. I am having the same problem with my 85 runner. Coolant spills out of the radiator cap and over flow tank. Hope you get this fix soon... or if I get mine fix first I will let you know.

My radiator filler neck is defective, causing the cap not to lock on it tightly. I bend the two teeth on the cap to make a better seal.

I have been driving the truck for two days and no leaks nor over heat.
