SR5 Gauge Swap

I would guess. Do you have a FSM? It should show the difference between all the variations of that year. I don't know a lot about electronics, so the only way for me to figure this stuff out is with a wiring diagram that tells me which wire is which. Otherwise don't know how to figure it out.

Yeah, that's not going to get you anywhere.
I would really start putting your feelers out for a FSM. There are so many things that need work on trucks this old (so many weird little things that wouldn't normally come up on a newer vehicle, and require a lot of trouble shooting), that having the factory service manual really really comes in handy.

Is there a different FSM for the pre 84 trucks or is it just the 85 covers everything?
You can purchase them I know but there were free ones floating around the web I saw....but I can't remember where lol.
NICE writeup BTW....very handy info there. It is a little confusing but any electrical with a dash is pretty darn confusing....it only gets worse with newer vehicles too.

Everything 85 and newer has a pdf. Anything before that, as far as I know, no one has taken their manual apart and scanned it and offered it up. So yes, every year Toyota, as far as I'm aware, has a FSM. They just weren't (and aren't) available digitally. I have one for my 83. There is a place that sells them new. You'll pay a lot more, but they are out there. There's a thread from a couple years back with a link to the site they guy bought his from.
Most engine, driveline and suspension stuff in the 85 FSM will be way better than any Haynes or Chilton manual. But I absolutely would not trust the wiring layout in them for our trucks. I wouldn't even trust the 1982 wiring diagram for my 83.
Thanks! And yeah, it's confusing. Right after finished doing it, I could have probably figured out a better way to explain it all, but at this point all the specifics of what I did have faded away...

You can on autozone.com and create an account and get access to wiring guides in the trouble shooting section. They have them for 79-83 I know. Not as detailed with colors and such but better than the haynes manual. Periodically check ebay for a FSM and you will find one. Took me a while but I got one for my 83 in great shape for $35 shipped. If I can find another one cheap Im going to buy it and strip it apart and scan it all to a pdf.

Think I might just do it to the one I have now. I read up on removing the spine on a book and apparently Kinkos can do it for for like $5. They have a machine that will slice it right off in a few minutes. Might get my wife to stop by one tomorrow and have it done. She drives by one on the way to work everyday. And then at work I have access to a adf (automatic document feeder) printer at work which can email the pdf scan(s). Most likely scan in each individual chapter and then make copies of each and make one giant pdf as well. I personally would prefer a folder full of pdf's of each chapter. Then when I'm done I can use the handy automatic hole punch and put it into a binder to protect it. And finally upload it to a file share website so everyone can get access to it. If the file share website thing doesn't work or gets blocked I guess I could just email it in chunks and give directions on how assemble it into one pdf if desired.
I have received a lot of great advice and help on here so I think it would be a nice way to show my appreciation

The oil,and volt gauge plug in was already in my non sr5 82 it was located just above and between the heater and a/c box under the dash just plugged it in and they worked, and change the short harness that goes to the senders on the right side of the engine. No splicing on mine for those two gauges.

OK I installed the new gauge cluster and everything works but the tach. I stole the pin from the charge light because I have a GM alt and a volt meter that plugs in the cig outlet. I pulled the Tach out and it physically looks OK. All the coils/springs work and if spin it it springs back to 0. Probably gonna start measuring all the resistors unless anyone has any other ideas. Oh I used to have an external tach installed and it worked fine.

I took it out and replaced a diode (turns out it was good anyways) and put it back and it worked. I think one of the screws that makes the connections to the tach was loose and I fixed it when I put it back in. All good now. And 83 excellent job on the write up it was very easy to read.

Suncomb posted on this somewhere within the last month or so, try looking around for the thread. Someone asked what size the openings were in the stock cluster, and he had exact measurements.
If that's what you're asking? What will fit in the stock enclosure?

My tach stopped working again but I ordered another cluster (came with all the wiring harnesses too!) and swapped it in and it works. Speedometer needle is jumpy but I ordered a new cable for it. I also bought the oil and voltage gauge pod from a fellow yotatech member. I bought the new oil pressure sensor that is for a gauge and not a switch. You had to do this to didn't you 83? Looks like I can just pull the old one off and put the new one on without draining any oil.

Yes, I had to replace the switch with a sensor. I don't know about doing it without draining oil. I just assumed there would be oil in the galley, so I put the new one in the next time I changed my oil.
Just so you know, the SR5 models would technically have both a switch and sensor/sending unit. The switch is what turns your oil light on in the dash. But I did the same as you...I just swapped one for the other.
